A FRONT-ROW SEAT TO GHANA’S MILITARY & POLITICAL HISTORY
Major Patrick Adjei-Ampofo (rtd) served as the Military Assistant to former Head of State, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, for six years.
In this deeply revealing interview, he takes us behind the scenes of the Acheampong era, sharing firsthand accounts of the decisions, successes, challenges and controversies that shaped one of the most consequential periods in Ghana’s history.
His story, however, goes far beyond his time with General Acheampong.
He was involved in two major military coups — the overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which he says he only became aware of when it was about to happen, and the coup that brought General Acheampong to power.
He also recounts his arrest during the 1979 AFRC uprising, the imprisonment, beatings and torture he endured, and how he was scheduled to be executed during the third round of executions — an execution that ultimately never happened.
Six years beside Acheampong. Two coups. Imprisonment. Torture. A scheduled execution. And a lifetime of memories from some of Ghana’s most turbulent years.
This is a conversation filled with history, revelations and firsthand accounts you won’t find in the textbooks.
