@gazettedotcom Thank God people and businesses and nonprofits in Cedar Rapids had insurance during the derecho. With so many more billion-dollar disasters, no wonder insurance rates are going up.
Climate change is increasing costs for insurance, construction, and food, along with more out-of-pocket disaster damage. We urgently need to slow down, stop and reverse the buildup of climate pollution in the atmosphere.
Took this picture ten years ago on Veteran’s Day in Glidden off Highway 30. I personally knew a World War I veteran, my grandfather. Let us always commemorate this day and strive continually for the peace it envisions.
The death toll from the recent hurricane in Haiti and Jamaica is now up to 75, according to Reuters. Please support disaster relief with our elected officials, and please support Episcopal Relief & Development or your other favorite relief agencies.

Did you the so-called “clean CR” passed by the U.S. House would only operate the government through November 21?!?!?
Time for Republicans to get back to work and negotiate with Democrats if they want Democratic votes to end the shutdown.
@boblatta Representative Latta, please get back to work to negotiate with Democrats if you think you need their votes. Your CR was only good through November 21 anyhow.

Get back to work. End the shutdown.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is over 4 inches below average since September 1 - 65.6% below average - and there is very little precipitation in the forecast.
Please conserve, water your young trees, and take action to help stop the buildup of climate pollution in the atmosphere.
BREAKING: Twenty-five people died in southern Haiti after a river flooded by Hurricane Melissa burst its banks, the mayor of a coastal town told AP. https://t.co/F4BHOqpNtc

“Complete devastation”: Hurricane Melissa tore into Jamaica as a Category 5 monster, leaving widespread destruction and at least two dozen deaths across the Caribbean.
The death toll from the current hurricane is climbing. Please support disaster relief.
Only 13 years after Sandy made landfall in New Jersey and New York - with hundreds of disasters since then - we still have not learned the lessons of that storm.

USDA has reserve funds to continue to pay food assistance (SNAP). Trump should do that, or Congress should come into session to require it.

We urgently need major relief services for Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Please contribute generously and call Congress to get to work supporting relief efforts.

“Since siding with Barack Obama twice, Iowa has become a stronghold for Mr. Trump. Yet perhaps no state has struggled more with his economic policies. During the first quarter of 2025, Iowa’s GDP dropped by 6.1 percent, more than any other state aside from neighboring Nebraska.” https://t.co/3tQERNWtvX
Install solar if you are able - at home, at work, and in the community - and please express your support for solar with elected officials and candidates.

I was encouraged to see the solar panels on Grace United Methodist Church along Highway 6 in Tiffin today. Solar reduces energy costs and air pollution. It is something many building owners and landowners can do.

Praying for everyone facing the record-breaking storm affecting Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and potentially Cuba.
Please support disaster relief and action to stop the buildup of climate pollution in the atmosphere.
