Ancient Japanese scholar Sugawara no Michizane (A.D. 845-903) wrote a poem more than 1,000 years ago that hit a little too close to home:

Definitely something to look at more closely. Saving here until I can drive into it more. Cranial deformation is the outside of binding and reshaping the skull, usually when an infant is still young and the bones are more malleable.

From graves at the Hirota site, people on Tanegashima may have practiced cranial deformation in the Yayoi and early Kofun, though it looks to be outside the Yamato polity, and possibly outside their influence as I don't see evidence of kofun at the site.

Pretty much just speculation and yet another rabbit hole to jump down into at some point, but if anyone else has examples of leather shields from the Kofun era, let me know.

You stumble on the coolest things while looking for something else.

While the leather deteriorated, we can still make out the pattern and shape from the lacquer.

Now I'm taking a new look at a lot of haniwa "shields". Many look like "wings" on the back of a figure, or are strangely curved. Iron would be heavy, and curving wood is possible, but a lot of work. So I wonder if some of these were leather.
