- Debt traps and predatory lending by Western institutions

- Cold War proxy wars that kept brutal regimes in power as long as they picked the right side

- Ongoing resource extraction by multinational corporations under favorable terms extracted from weak states

Ethiopia suffered the Scramble for Africa it was surrounded, blockaded, had its trade routes controlled, and was deliberately isolated by colonial powers who didn’t want a successful Black independent state inspiring resistance elsewhere.

Colonialism harmed Africa regionally and systemically, not just country by country. Ethiopia also endured Italian invasion, a brutal Derg dictatorship, engineered famines, and Cold War proxy interference all connected to the broader colonial and neocolonial order.

Vietnam’s growth came largely after it expelled foreign powers and built on its own terms. It’s arguably a case for self-determination, not against anti-colonialism arguments.

This is a classic cherry-picking fallacy choosing two data points to dismiss a structural argument. Colonialism’s effects are measured across dozens of countries over generations, through extracted wealth, destroyed institutions, imposed borders, and ongoing neocolonial debt structures. Single exceptions don’t disprove systemic patterns.

There is substantial peer-reviewed economic literature (Acemoglu, Robinson, etc.) linking colonial extraction models to persistent underdevelopment. This isn’t a fringe “excuse” it’s mainstream economic history.

Lastly Ethiopia did largely resist formal colonization but Italy briefly occupied it 1936–1941, which colonialism defenders often minimize 😒

Ethiopia was never colonized.

For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.

Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.

If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true.
