He’s the bedrock of the modern Madrid, he prepared them for Europe back when they were mentally falling short on that stage. Before Jose Mourinho arrived, Real Madrid were consistently getting knocked out early in the Champions League, there was a psychological block more than anything else.

Mourinho changed that. He didn’t just improve them tactically, he hardened them. He built a team that could go deep in Europe again, reaching multiple semi-finals and, more importantly, believing they belonged there. That belief is what carried into the next era.

The core he shaped players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, and Karim Benzema, Luka Modric became the backbone of the side that would later dominate Europe. By the time Carlo Ancelotti came in and delivered La Decima, the mentality was already there. Mourinho didn’t win the Champions League with Madrid, but he laid the psychological and competitive foundation for it.

That’s why bringing him back now feels appealing to some because Madrid don’t just need tactics, they need that edge again. Someone to reset the mentality, demand accountability, and make the team difficult to break both physically and mentally.

The question is whether you want a builder of mentality again, or someone to refine what’s already there but the answer is still Jose Mourinho.
