The funny thing is that these are likely recent. Some aborigines in Australia suddenly had origin myths for the camels there, which were brought by whites to transport goods and water across part of the desert, and then released when that job was done, leading to feral populations.

So there is some sort of constant organic churn in deep dark places which continually refreshes the upper organic boundaries like the Amazon has totally depleted soils under the forest because all of the nutrients are within the sprawling organic masses on the surface layer. This causes a shallow but constantly reemerging mythos/proverb ecosystem which regenerates like any other organic material within it.
