New Export controls on rare earths announced

China will impose export controls on a range of rare earth technologies, covering mining, smelting and the recycling of secondary resources, the Ministry of Commerce announced on Thursday.

Approved by the State Council, China's Cabinet, the new measures mandate that overseas organizations and individuals must obtain a dual-use item export license from the ministry before shipping controlled items to destinations outside of China.

Effective immediately, the government has banned the unauthorized export of technologies, data and know-how, from mining and smelting to magnet production and recycling, including all technical services for production line assembly, maintenance and upgrading.

Chinese scientists confirm Mars has a solid inner core

(ECNS) — Chinese scientists, working with international collaborators, have for the first time confirmed the existence of a solid inner core inside Mars.
The discovery, led by Professors Sun Daoyuan and Mao Zhu from the University of Science and Technology of China, was based on in-depth analysis of seismic data recorded by NASA's InSight lander. Their study found that Mars harbors a solid core with a radius of about 600 kilometers.
According to the team, the core is mainly composed of a crystalline iron-nickel alloy enriched with light elements, which sheds new light on the planet's internal structure and evolution.

China updates data of American anti-Japanese aviation martyrs from WWII

The revisions, published on Friday, include corrections to names, dates of death, and official titles, many of which had been misspelled or inaccurately recorded due to incomplete historical archives. The updates also included newly added military ranks and dates of death for some of the martyrs.
This effort follows the hall's initial publication of a list of 2,590 American aviation martyrs on Sept. 3 last year. The original names were engraved on memorial steles in 1995 and 2015, but many details remained unclear due to a lack of original documents...

Top foreign CEOs head to China for meeting

Major attendees include executives of Qualcomm, FedEx, Siemens, BMW, Saudi Aramco, Rio Tinto, Nestlé, Mercedes-Benz, AstraZeneca, Estée Lauder, Citadel, Standard Chartered, KPMG, and Deutsche Bank, according to the report citing a draft agenda and sources familiar with the matter.
Top executives of several major mining, engineering and healthcare firms will also take part, according to the draft agenda, which could be subject to last-minute changes, the report said.
Compared to previous years, a higher proportion of European CEOs are represented at the event, which is scheduled to take place on March 23-24 at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing this year.
Foreign direct investment in the Chinese mainland in actual use reached 171.21 billion yuan ($23.87 billion) in the first two months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

China achieves world's first microsatellite-based, real-time quantum key distribution

(ECNS) -- China has achieved the world's first real-time space-to-ground quantum key distribution between a quantum microsatellite and lightweight, portable ground stations, according to the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) on Thursday.
The research team demonstrated satellite-based quantum key distribution with multiple ground stations and achieved the sharing of up to 1.07million bits of secure keys during a single satellite pass, according to the finding published in the international academic journal Nature.
The USTC-led Micius satellite has verified the feasibility of satellite quantum communications. However, scaling up quantum satellite constellations is challenging, requiring small lightweight satellites, portable ground stations, and real-time secure key exchange.
This achievement lays a solid foundation for the future launch of multiple microsatellites to form a quantum constellation, opening up new development paths for the global deployment of the quantum network. (By Gong Weiwei)

Rare family of jackals photographed in Qilian Mountains

A group of nine jackals, a national first-level protected wild animal, was recently photographed in the southern section of the Qilian Mountains National Nature Reserve in Gansu province.

The predators, characterized by their upright triangular ears and fluffy tail feathers, were observed in a complete family structure as they roamed freely between bare rocks and snow slopes in the morning light.

Jackals play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. The reappearance of this once locally extinct species serves as evidence of the ecosystem's recovery in the Qilian Mountains.
