Activity continues over the Strait of Hormuz with a few U.S. Air Force KC-135 "Stratotankers", KC-46A "Pegasus" and E-3G "Sentry" airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft joined by a U.S. Navy P-8A "Poseidon" maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft active at this time.
Earlier today, credible reports emerged, primarily from @_MartinKelly_, that while sailing in the English Channel, the Russian Project 11356R frigate, Admiral Grigorovich, fired warning shots at the British-flagged civilian sailing vessel, Bright Future. Subsequently, the Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) released a statement detailing the incident, saying that Bright Future, who was not sailing under her own power, ignored repeated warnings from the Russian vessel until it came within 150 meters from the vessel. Per the MOD release, at this point the crew used small arms to fire at the vessel’s course, at which point Bright Future abruptly changed direction. If true, and in accordance with initial speculation, the crew of the Admiral Grigorovich acted within the bounds of maritime law. However, the frigate’s tasking is more murky than the incident itself, as she remains on station in and around the English Channel to escort Russia’s sanctioned “shadow fleet” tankers through a recently enforced UK-France maritime gauntlet.
US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III #AE1235 as RCH5093 departed JB Andrews for Zurich, Switzerland (LSZH) with the first VIP support flight has been directed to divert to Germany as the Swiss are not allowing the flight to land at this time for an unknown reason.
According to Reuters, citing a number of people familiar with the matter, the U.S. has been using tactics, generally associated with Iran and other “sanctions dodging” state/non-state actors, to safely escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. One such tactic being used in the wider escort framework is ship-to-ship oil transfers in predetermined locations off the coasts of Oman and the United Arab Emirates, close to the areas demarcated by Iran’s newly formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA). Per the report, the U.S.-led mission involves the staggered departure of tankers from the aforementioned predetermined locations to meet with waiting Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) outside of the PGSA’s claimed jurisdiction, transferring their payloads, and then returning back through the strait.
If true, this comes against the backdrop of the G7 Summit in France, where world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, U.S. President Donald J. Trump, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, are in attendance.
