The Structural Puzzle: How Pattern-Matching Builds Better MFL Writers
https://t.co/yltJTm1c0F
#mfltwitterati #langchat #mflchat

Traditionalists want students to study grammar charts. CI purists want students to just sit back and listen to stories. But watch what happens when a student sits down with a TextActivities text-reconstruction game.

They aren't staring at an abstract rule, and they aren't drifting off while a text washes over them. They are actively solving a linguistic puzzle.

When a student plays an activity like "Jumbled Words" or "Jigsaw reading," their brain is forced into deep, microscopic pattern processing. By manipulating the pieces of a model text, they are training their spatial awareness of syntax. They start calculating the exact structural friction between their native language and the target language: “In English, I say ‘I got up,’ but this French block requires ‘Je me suis levé’.”

This isn't dry rote learning; it's gamified text manipulation. By turning a paragraph into an interactive puzzle, you are giving students a structural blueprint.

That is exactly why teachers see an immediate leap in writing quality: when students subsequently sit down to write independently, they aren't guessing word orders; they are replicating a physical pattern their brains have already assembled dozens of times.

Well #mfltwitterati it looks like I've finally been kicked out of Secondary MFL Matters on FB for questioning the value they give to various types of content:
❌ blogposts (unless from certain people)
✅ news articles
✅✅✅ misspelt French words on T-shirts or bags in UK shops

DIAGNOSTIC LISTENING - HOW IT CAN IMPROVE YOUR STUDENTS PERFORMANCE AND WHY

Why do students keep underperforming in GCSE listening exams despite endless practice papers? Perhaps because we spend too much time identifying wrong answers and too little investigating what caused them. In my latest post, I explore how diagnostic listening, targeted interventions and purposeful transcript work can help students develop the processing skills they need to perform better in listening exams, while rebuilding their confidence and self-efficacy

Stop Doing Dictation Backwards: What the Research Says Beginners Actually Need
I wrote this post out of growing frustration with the amount of non-research-informed advice on dictation I keep coming across online: random claims about what teachers should or shouldn’t do, or lists of activities presented in an equally random order, with little consideration of the cognitive processes that successful dictation actually involves.
So I decided to go back to first principles. What has to happen cognitively between hearing a sentence and successfully getting it onto the page? And, once we understand that, how should we scaffold dictation with beginners?
The post proposes a principled progression with specific activities going from speech perception and discrimination through segmentation, lexical access and sound–spelling mapping to supported and, eventually, independent transcription. I then show how the new Language Gym Dictation Trainer was designed to embody that progression.
In short: not a list of dictation activities, but a rationale for why they should come in a particular sequence.
