Caleb Hammer couldn’t believe what he was hearing
Imagine saying you make $9,000 a month… then admitting you haven’t actually been paying yourself and you’re behind on employee payroll.
Caleb: “How much do you make?”
Guest: “$9,000 a month.”
Caleb: “Is that what the business makes, or what you actually take home?”
Guest: “That’s what I’m trying to take home.”
Caleb: “Trying? There’s a difference between trying and actually taking home. So what’s the real number?”
Guest: “I haven’t really been paying myself. I just recently separated my business and personal finances.”
Caleb: “When did you start paying yourself?”
Guest: “This month.”
Caleb: “Then how have you been paying your bills?”
Guest: “Everything’s been coming out of the business.”
Caleb: “I’m being told you’re behind on payroll right now.”
Guest: “Yes.”
Caleb: “Payroll comes first. Your employees come before you. If you hire people, paying them is your responsibility.”
Guest: “I’m trying to pay myself more so I can pay the bills…”
Caleb: “No. Your employees get paid first.”
Later, the guest tried defending it with advice from the Profit First book… and Caleb wasn’t buying it
