⚠️ Update: The internet blackout in #Iran has entered its 19th day with international connectivity still unavailable after 432 hours to all but a chosen few.
As the world debates if or how the war should proceed, one voice is effectively missing: the voice of the Iranian people.

Australia is facing pressure to protect the Iranian women’s soccer team, the Lionesses, as the squad faces criticism at home over their failure to sing the national anthem at a Women’s Asian Cup match on the Gold Coast last week https://t.co/L1JfdJassf
🟥The Honorable Penny Wong @SenatorWong
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia
The lives of the Iranian Women’s National Football Team are in imminent danger. After their peaceful protest in Australia, Iranian state-linked media has officially labeled them "wartime traitors."
In Iran, "treason" is a capital offense punishable by death. These athletes face arbitrary detention and execution if forced to return.
I urgently call on the Australian Government to provide immediate asylum and protection for these brave women. Australia must not allow them to be sent back to a regime that views a silent protest as a crime worthy of the gallows.
🔴Translation of the threatening remarks by the Islamic Republic's state security TV host
"I must emphasize that traitors during wartime should be dealt with more severely. Anyone who takes a step against the country under wartime conditions must face a harsher confrontation. Regarding the incident where our women’s national football team refused to sing the national anthem and the photos that were circulated—I will not dwell on the details—but they must be dealt with more severely. This is no longer a symbolic act of protest. In wartime conditions, in this current state where [hostilities occur], going there and refusing to sing the national anthem is the peak of dishonor and lack of patriotism. Both the public and the authorities must treat these individuals as 'wartime traitors.' It should not be viewed merely as an objection or a symbolic gesture. The stain of dishonor and treason must remain on their foreheads, and they must face a definitive and severe confrontation."
FIFA and the AFC must act immediately.
They must issue a clear public statement affirming that every player competing under their jurisdiction holds the unqualified right to any response, or non-response, to their own national anthem.
They must make equally clear that any threat made, or any action taken, against the Iranian women’s players, their families, or any other player or staff member for conduct protected under FIFA’s own human rights framework constitutes a direct and actionable violation of that framework — with consequences for the member federation responsible.
The Iranian women’s players still have a match remaining in this tournament. The threat to them and to their families back home does not end with the final whistle. History tells us that.
FIFA has suspended member associations for government interference in football governance. The documented intimidation of national team players by state security forces — forcing them under threat of family persecution to perform a political act in a FIFA competition — is government interference of the most direct and violent kind.
It also constitutes a serious violation of the human rights obligations FIFA has publicly claimed.
Any persecution of Iranian players — women or men — on the basis of protected actions taken while competing in a FIFA-regulated environment must result in immediate suspension of Iran from FIFA membership.
That consequence must be stated clearly, publicly, and now.
Iran’s women’s footballers sang their country’s national anthem before their latest Asian Cup match days after refusing to do so.
The squad also saluted while Mehr-e Khavaran was played before kick-off of their 4-0 defeat against hosts Australia, sparking accusations they had been “forced” into it.

The Iran women's football team has been labelled 'wartime traitors' on Iran State Television.
Why? Because they didn't sing the anthem in their first match of the @theafcdotcom Asian Cup.
For those critics who doubted the stories on the pressure they were under, watch this...
