The coverage of Canada's refusal to do a trade deal with the US, at the expense of a 'no deal' solution with their biggest trading partner, strikes me as curiously, but not very logically, different from the 2018-19 coverage over Brexit and UK-EU trade policy.

Canada is currently being praised for standing up to the US -- its largest and closest trading partner. Canada has opted for a 'no deal' with the US rather than accede to a bad deal. In so doing, Canada says it is protecting its own sovereignty over trade policy, even if it means costs will rise at least temporarily.

This differs quite a lot from how many of the same 'sensible' commentators in 2018-19 attacked those who said that Britain should stay outside of the EU custom union and be prepared to take 'no deal' over having a bad deal imposed on the UK.

I recall vividly that this position was portrayed by many 'sensible' commentators as basically an expression of insanity.

Delta’s CEO has said his company will use AI to maximize its prices and boost profitability by charging different customers different rates, though Delta later clarified it was charging based on route demand, not based on individual consumer profiles. Coca-Cola creeped people out with its AI-generated Christmas ad. Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy and JPMorgan’s Consumer Chief Marianne Lake have both said AI will allow them to cut jobs. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has said his system could lead to AI taking over. He and other AI CEO's have said AI will eradicate jobs in the future.

I totally get why people are opposed to data centers. The noise, land, water, etc. are the articulated response. The actual reason is fear based on the statements of the chief advocates of the technology.

We are fundamentally constrained by events both near and far as human beings, political subjects, economic agents, etc. Iran currently constrains our ability to take vacations etc. Even hegemons don't have perfect freedom of action or perfect autonomy. Doubly so for democratic citizens. No state has ever been autarkic, that's a fantasy. And no democratic citizen has ever been sovereign, that's a *libertarian* fantasy, ironically enough.

So yes, there are tradeoffs, none of which imply that there should be 48 percent tariffs on tennis shoes.

She just got baby bird fed a breaking news item--literally as a gift, according to her source--and she inexplicably convinced herself that this was actually an elaborate ploy by the "Deep State" to entrap her. It's so perfect. Between her and Nick Shirley, I think the right has enough talent to run a journalism department at UATX.
