Remembering Professor Andreas Eshete
"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."
I am deeply saddened by the sudden news of the departure of Andreas, who was not only my Professor but also my Brother and Friend.
The impact Andreas had on my life was truly remarkable. He began as my professor, evolved into my friend, became my boss, and ultimately, a brother to me. His intellect was shocking, matched only by his profound humanity.
I will have much more to say about Andreas, this philosopher of with a mind both sharp and innovative, capable of imaginative leaps of extraordinary degree, in a longer tribute later.
For now, I want to say that Andreas was a true intellectual giant who, following in the footsteps of his favorite philosopher John Rawls, worked tirelessly for a just society, fraternity and solidarity. He transcended the divides of identity politics through his scholarly and intellectual contributions, political stands, and public service. He stood for justice and human dignity for all – nationally, regionally, and globally – but above all, for the protection and defense of the most disadvantaged in society.
Andreas also personified ideals rarely seen in the often intolerant landscape of his generation and ours. An egalitarian and humane soul, he was divinely considerate yet firm and fair with all strands of political thoughts in Ethiopia.
Andreas's death is a grave loss to many personally, to our region, the African continent, and humanity as a whole. Yet, he will remain immortal in our living memory and through his impactful academic works.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family, to his son Alula, his friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
May God grant him eternal peace.
And in the words of Maya Angelou: "Your legacy is every life you have touched." Andrushca!
Mehari and Family
I am deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Andreas Eshete, with whom I had the privilege to work closely in the past. He was a brilliant mind, an intellectual, and a kind-hearted individual who touched the lives of many.
His departure is a loss felt deeply in Ethiopia and across Africa, but his legacy of promoting justice, human dignity, and equity will continue to inspire.
My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and students during this tough time.
You will be dearly missed, Andreas.
It’s with great sadness that I learned of the the passing of Professor Andreas Eshete, a wonderful man of principles, a great intellectual, a world class philosopher and a lifelong fighter in the cause of justice & fraternity- a true patriot who gave his all to the people he loved & cared for. I consider myself lucky to have been his student, friend and more importantly, an avid follower of his counsel on matters big and small. His dedication to the cause of justice, equality & fraternity also meant he had all along maintained an unshakable love and support for the cause of the people of Tigray even when the chips were down. I was able to give him a ring even when communication was virtually impossible. I really regret not having visited him in the last year or so. I obviously missed out on much. It’s the irony of life that we often assume away mortality when it comes to people we cherish most. I salute you, Andreas.

Arresting individuals who played a significant role in your return to power seems to be an ill-advised course of action. We strongly demand the immediate release of @Tsegay_Gebremedhin and all other political prisoners.
