I would strongly discourage young people from building their own custom home. I expect that anyone that has gone through the process would advise the same. Why? It’s a long, arduous process often with unexpected issues and setbacks(see lumbar prices in 2020) not worth the payoff for someone who may possibly move in the next 5-10 years. The pain of building is only worth it if you’re going to stay in the home for a very long time, probably forever. The HOA thing and shoddy construction is also exaggerated. Most of the content around this topic is rage bait. As a broker, I rarely see shoddy construction(definitely nothing like what we see on the Internet) and most HOAs in Oregon are very minimal. If you are worried about shoddy construction, I recommend a pre-drywall inspection.

I strongly encourage younger Americans to consider looking into building your own home from the ground up (settling the land as it were)
These ridiculous prices and shoddy construction of houses in HOA nightmare communities are not worth it
@squirtBeetle @ModernDad It doesn’t make any sense because it’s not true. He made up the story to make a point. And I believe he’s correct. I cautioned my wife about this just a few days ago.
@ByronLazine It’s a nice thought but no one cares what grandpa’s rate was. Only what their current rate is. Over half the country is 3% or lower. There are better arguments to be made for buyers such as lower prices/less competition. Refi later( I wouldn’t bank on it though)
