@godspeedseries@OlanRogers If it makes anyone feel any better I was sick as a dog the whole time🤧. I didnt see the sun for 5 days, and when I did, it blinded me for approximately 73 seconds. All of you are in my will and should be receiving 1/3rd of a cent should I succumb to my illness.
Not powerless.
For so long, the model has been you sell a project, and then they buy it and owe all the rights. Change in Hollywood is so slow, but licensing is where it needs to go. I know that is a EVERST of a sentence.
Your IP and your creation are so important. The networks needs our ideas to work; without them, they have nothing. That "created by" credit is Wonka's Golden Ticket. This is usually determined in a few ways, but the person who birthed the idea/characters or who wrote the pilot script. It's important not to give out credits just to give out credits.
For you, new creators starting out, never sign anything until talking to an attorney. Or just get other eyes on it, your family or whoever. On Final Space, I didn't even realize I actually signed my rights away to NewForm Digital, who gave me 10k to make that pilot, I gave it all to Studio Joho to animate it. And then TBS bought Final Space from New Form, leaving me with nothing from that sale. I was still the creator, though, so I had that, but I was the last person to make my deal because I had no reps. It took me a minute to get some, and then I was given the scraps of what was left over. My Season One deal was awful; I was the lowest-paid producer, but again, I didn't know. It was my first show, and truly I didn't really care; I was making a TV show.
One of the big things I've been doing is trying to make sure first-time creators don't go through what I've been through. I can't stress enough what those years did to my mental state, and to almost lose myself in the process was something I never thought was possible.
I did feel powerless and helpless. However, then I realized I wasn't playing the game right, this is a business, and you have to operate with a business mind and a creative mind as one.
It's a chess game, and get this YOU have the power with your creation. Hollywood wants that power and will fight to control it. And at a certain point, you have to balance out what you're okay giving up and what you aren't.
I've actually been working on The Lion's Blaze for over seven years. New Form owned the rights, but that time, I was smart enough to wait 18 months to get my rights back before taking it out. I took it out and sold it. Warner passed on it, and then once I started to sell it everywhere, they said they didn't pass on it, haha, and THEN wove Season 3 of Final Space with Lion's Blaze. Checkmate! If I didn't go with them, I think there wouldn't have been a Season 3. SO I sacrificed my Bishop to save the my Queen. I went with Warner and then the pandemic hit, and they sort of forgot they had the Lion's Blaze, and once again, a dream turned into a nightmare. I thought it was 100% dead. However, I got Lion's Blaze out of Warner during merger number 2; it took a year, and I resold it to where it should have been since the beginning.
Nothing is ever truly dead; remember that. You do have power. You just have to be willing to fight. It sucks this is the crap you have to do to make stuff in Hollywood, it is but that's the chess board they are playing with.
Now, I wanted to spotlight what happened with Lion's Blaze because I think indie animation is the future of animation. If you can create a hit or fanbase without the help of a network, then they should only be allowed to license it. You build everything from the ground up. Now look, that's easier said than done. However, if everything begins to move to indie for animation and if enough of these creators are educated enough to know how to handle the business side, you will never be taken advantage of in the space. Ask for a license deal, they might not give it to you but after a few negotiations you could get a better deal.
To any new creator, if you ever face that moment where contracts are flying around and are unsure what to do, reach out with any questions. I don't want anything, you don't need to give me anything. I just want to see other creators fly higher than I have. Cheers!

I put a ton of time into the final design for Godspeed's 'Ion'. We all wanted something that felt organic, so I ended up sitting on the idea of using a retina as the base for the whole thing, using pulses that felt like lighting on a planet surface:
Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global have held talks about a potential merger of the two media companies, Variety has confirmed.
