the catalyst for soran’s revenge is the jeamni massacre, where her life as a wife and mother changed forever…

the jeamni massacre (제암리 학살 사건) came on april 15, 1919, over a month after over 2 million koreans took to the streets to protest. the japanese army suspected the residents of jaemri of staging a protest in their church.

japanese soldiers in a vengeful mood from the independence protests then lured the people of saemri to the village church under the guise of a public lecture.

once gathered in the church, the japanese army began shooting through the paper windows, and killing anyone who resisted outside, up to 30 unarmed korean villagers died that day. to cover up the atrocity, the soldiers then set the church on fire, alone with the houses of many of the villagers.. leaving burnt ruins in the wake.
