Not all struggles are visible.
Some people smile through pain, stress, and silent battles every day.
A little kindness, patience, and understanding can make a difference.
Today, I celebrate Africa, a continent rich in culture, strength, diversity, resilience, and endless potential. I honour the motherland's beautiful people, vibrant heritage, and the spirit of unity that continues to inspire the world.
For clarity, we celebrate Africa and Africans daily. This is why I am proud and grateful to be involved with The African Achievers Awards, which is a prestigious platform that recognises and celebrates outstanding individuals and organisations making significant contributions to Africa’s growth and development. It honours excellence in leadership, business, public service, community impact, innovation, and humanitarian efforts, while promoting positive change and inspiring future generations.
Africa Day is celebrated every year on 25 May to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later became the African Union. Happy Africa Day! @Africanarchieversawards

We are incredibly proud of our founder, Susan Fajana-Thomas OBE, for her dedication, leadership, and commitment to making a real difference in politics and to people's lives. Your passion for service and positive change continues to inspire so many of us. Wishing you continued
After 16 years of public service, serving as a Councillor, civic Mayor/Speaker and Cabinet Member, I lost my seat at last week’s local election. While naturally disappointed, it has been an absolute privilege to represent the people of Stoke Newington. I remain incredibly proud of the work I have led and the positive impact I have achieved, together with Hackney Labour and Hackney Council’s brilliant officers, for our communities.
Over the years, I have worked passionately with residents, partners, businesses, police, and community organisations to help make Hackney safer, stronger, and more vibrant. Five areas I am especially proud of include:
1. Through strong partnership working with the police, MOPAC, community organisations, residents, and local stakeholders, I helped drive a more balanced and community-focused approach to policing in Hackney. By promoting accountability, engagement, and constructive dialogue, we worked to challenge negative perceptions of policing, improve trust and confidence within our communities, and support initiatives that reduced crime, serious youth violence, and gang activities, making Hackney a safer place for everyone.
2. Through strong partnership working with community organisations, survivors’ groups, charities, schools, and statutory agencies, I helped champion innovative initiatives and policies to combat Violence Against Women and Girls and Domestic Abuse. By promoting prevention, education, early intervention, and better support for victims and survivors, we strengthened awareness, improved collaboration across services, and worked to create safer spaces and communities for women and girls across the borough.
3. Through strong leadership, partnership working, and innovative licensing policies, I helped transform Hackney’s Night Time Economy into a more vibrant, inclusive, and safer environment. By supporting local businesses, strengthening engagement with venue operators, and working closely with the police and partners, we improved public safety, boosted confidence in our nightlife spaces, and helped create a thriving NTE that benefits residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
4. Through progressive licensing policies, strong engagement with traders and businesses, and a commitment to sustainability, I helped support the transformation of Hackney’s markets into vibrant spaces for culture, enterprise, and community cohesion. By championing local businesses, improving market environments, and encouraging innovation and inclusivity, we strengthened Hackney’s markets as thriving destinations that bring communities together and celebrate the borough’s diversity and creativity. Under my leadership, Hackney Markets and Street Trading Service became the most decorated in the UK.
5. Through the Community Resilience Partnership, I worked with Hackney’s diverse communities, faith groups, residents, and local organisations to strengthen community cohesion and resilience across the borough. By encouraging dialogue, partnership working, inclusion, and community-led initiatives, we helped bring people together, build stronger relationships between communities, increase trust and understanding, and create more resilient neighbourhoods capable of responding collectively to challenges and change.
Although this chapter has changed, my passion for leadership, community engagement, policy development, strategic partnership working, and delivering positive change remains as strong as ever.
I am now open to new opportunities where I can bring my experience in public policy, community safety, stakeholder engagement, leadership, governance, and strategic development to new challenges and organisations.
Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout my journey, particularly officers from Community Safety, Enforcement and Business Regulations, Markets and Street Trading, VAWG and Youth Justice. The relationships, experiences, and achievements will always stay with me.
A meaningful life is built in small, intentional moments.
This month, choose kindness, connection, gratitude, and purpose. One day at a time.
Together with Action for Happiness, let’s create a world that feels a little lighter, warmer, and more human.
