Morocco-born Larbi Benbarek played for the French national football team from 1938 to 1954 and never got French citizenship. He died in Morocco in dire poverty in 1992. Arguably the best player of his generation, Pele called him the God of football.

Global North "humanitarian" interventions in the G. South always centre on paying G. North multinational companies somehow, & market liberalisation of G. South that destroys the environment and market capacity of small scale practitioners in the G. South.
Majority Global South women raise & educate kids without clinics or schools (cut by IMF reforms), chop firewood, fetch water at rivers, carry it on their heads cook, clean, labour in fields in the sun. GDP sees no value in this, so IMF reforms do not support or empower this work
Despite the reasons for Global South underdevelopment, the responsibility lies with its people. Starting with corrupt G South leaders repressing their people, and the G South activism & media so mentally colonised by the G North that they fail to objectively question its actions.
IMF loans specify that the loans must buy goods from subsidised G. North companies, often at above market rates, killing G South industries (who IMF does not allow to be subsidised). All the while because transactions are increasing so is GDP, so to IMF this is development.
Coerced by WorldBank & IMF, environmental protection & workers' protection are cut to bring foreign companies. Healthcare is cut to reduce gvt spending. More people get sick & require expensive private healthcare, which are the transactions that increase GDP. Is that development?
What is the use of a “stronger economy” with less healthcare, food, education & housing, the actual things useful for society? Capitalism prioritises GDP, a measure of the amount of money transacting in an economy, regardless of the actual value it is giving to the host society.
That the IMF & World Bank loans come on condition that Global South countries cut funding for basic minimum social services such as primary health and education is reason enough to always reject them. There is a deceitful deification of “GDP Growth” as a measure of development.
