Bittersweet 4-3 at Arena Championship 12, not bad for my first big tournament, but really could have had a different results with two small different plays.
All and all happy with the result and with the Everything Pizza Team! Decklist and thoughts below 👇
@fireshoes
Out of AC12 after losing semifinal to @AcediaSloth's amazing Yawg list. It was the highest stake match I ever played. I only felt relieved and grateful 🥹
Huge shout out to our testing team coming together with this Highnoon list. (3 teammates went 5-3 losing win-and-ins)
@OndrejStrasky@MtgOwN7 I agree in general I expected way less black based midrange decks. I guess when people don't have much time to test a super open format they just prefer to submit thoughtseize.
I made it through Day 1 of Arena Championship 12!
I couldn't have done this without Jill, who practiced with me every single day, Sugillo for sharing an amazing decklist, and the rest of the team for all the great discussions. Thank you all so much!
It’s honestly surprising how many games Lurrus + Safekeep + Voice can grind out by themselves.
The Sentinels were @Kapala_mtg idea and I think they improved the midrange matchups, which are definitely tougher than they are for Yawgmoth, being great against Phoenix too.
Bittersweet ending at AC12, 3-3 with Sam Combo, but very happy with the list and my play overall. Worked on this list right after prebans. Thanks to Everything Pizza Team and @Kapala_mtg for the discussions.
55-39 underdog team record 💪 Might publish a guide soon.
@fireshoes
I think there ended up being more nonwhite Bx midrange than I expected. Compared to the other Sam builds I saw at the AC, 4 Peddlers and Lurrus felt like absolute musts to me.
I was also really happy with the midrange backup plan I came up with.
@Jonvvest@fireshoes I started writing a long one some time ago but didn't manage to finish it due to work. I am considering going back to it again, will see how it lines up with the ac prep. In case, I will probably post it here
7-1 on Day 1, then 4-1 on Day 2 with Yawgmoth. I dont know if it is enough, hopefully it is because I then lost my 6th game.
Deck felt great all weekend and I believe until gsz or ballista are not on arena ritual is the way to go.
Matchups in thread @fireshoes
@Kapala_mtg I haven’t found a Cauldron version that didn’t feel a bit clunky at times, but with current testing I have to admit I might have been sleeping on it. If Phoenix rises in the meta, Cauldron also gets better.
@Kapala_mtg Cauldron has potential to be better, more resilient to removal/discard and better at combo. Missing Ballista hurts the deck’s speed a lot. Also, access to Grist and the JDepraz card (really only good with Cauldron) makes GSZ more appealing there, but GSZ feel 2 bad w/o dryad
