I saw this firsthand while living in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll. When resorts are close to local islands, many people choose to stay in their communities instead of moving to Malé. They build their homes, support local businesses, and create a better future where they grew up.

This isn’t about turning every island into a resort. It’s about making smarter choices when developing new ones.

Why reclaim new land when we already have islands that can benefit from sustainable development?

Distance is often a matter of mindset. When there is opportunity, people find a way. Seaplanes already reach even distant atolls like Shaviyani, proving that connectivity is possible.

Development should strengthen local communities, not move them away from home.
