In 2022 Byju’s was worth $22 billion. Most valuable edtech startup in the world.

Behind the headline something else was happening.

3,500 employees laid off without severance. Many did not receive their last 2 to 3 months of salary. PF deducted from employees every month but never deposited with EPFO.

Parents who paid Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh for courses could not get refunds.

US lenders went to court saying $1.2 billion was moved without authorisation.

In 2024 Byju’s was declared insolvent.

Byju Raveendran gave interviews calling himself a victim of a conspiracy.

EPFO filed a criminal complaint for non deposit of employee PF funds.

The 3,500 employees are still waiting.

The parents are still waiting.

The PF is still unaccounted for.

In India a founder can raise billions, destroy a company and give podcast interviews about resilience.

The employees do not get a podcast.
