A @nytimes op-ed by #BankStreet@Shaelsuransky explores the opportunities & challenges of AI in schools. He warns against isolated screen time & shares how tech can instead be used to measure capacities that matter most: critical thinking & problem-solving https://t.co/gH3RSo2B9F
“In wealthy districts, parents will demand schools centered on human interaction: seminar tables, heated debates, messy projects. Students in poorer schools, often Black and Latino children, will be handed laptops and headphones...”
@read_naveed@hollypret This contract funds an innovative after school program for 275 5th-12th grade students who live in high poverty communities in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Student participants have a 95% graduation rate. Funding is awarded by vote of the City Council but disbursed by NYCPS.
I’ve had the privilege of getting to know Superintendent Samuels over the last several years — first as a parent and PTA officer, and then as an elected official in the school district he oversees. He is an absolutely superb educator and leader — incredibly thoughtful about how to make schools work for all our kids, and effective in implementing his vision. He is at the same time a steady hand and a change agent. He would be an outstanding Schools Chancellor.
Kamar Samuels is an inspired choice to lead NYC public schools - he’s creative, patient, thoughtful and understands that rigor and equity are both essential goals for our schools. https://t.co/Dj4XkjcNCZ via @nytimes
New @NYDailyNews op-ed by #BankStreet@Shaelsuransky shares recommendations for how the mayor-elect can meaningfully transform #NewYorkCity public schools, such as by building yearlong paid teacher residencies, establishing #ECE apprenticeships, & more https://t.co/TolJOtYbDw
#BankStreet President @Shaelsuransky spoke to @politico about the urgent need to protect low and middle-income students at risk of being shut out of college and graduate school. https://t.co/MDaRsqqZ4r
Thousands of low and middle income students in New York State risk being shut out of college and graduate school due to cuts in federal aid. New York State needs to act to protect them or risk permanently damaging our higher education system. @CICU https://t.co/5HFfBaBjzv

Too often we treat “universal child care” as the finish line. That is too small for New York. A universal system worthy of this city would guarantee not only a place for every child, but a level of teaching that closes the achievement gap in our schools.
I’ve been pretty silent about politics thus far but I’ll tell you this. Having a teacher as Vice President is a beautiful thing. Having a family of educators in the White House is even more beautiful. Tim Walz and his wife are teachers. There is a certain type of thoughtfulness, capacity to see beyond and humanity that educators have. To teach or to have ever taught changes you in the most magical ways. You need people with that outlook in power and in proximity to it.
Bear with me for a moment — I did the math, and on behalf of all New Yorkers, I demand that @RobertKennedyJr promptly send the City of New York what he owes for his ursine exploits.
Closing the day with our great City Comptroller @bradlander! And with more family — my son Ben, sisters Risa and Renee, and niece Ilana — out canvassing in the fighting 69th!
GET READY WEST SIDE!
Local boy makes good: @MicahLasher is your Democratic nominee to the state Assembly!
In his corner, he had the teachers, he had the tenants, he had the workers, and he had YOU.
And now we’re going to have him in our corner. Doesn’t get better than that.
Billions were allocated to schools, including to improve air quality — against viruses, allergens, fire smoke and high CO2.
Salespeople descended.
Many schools overpaid for inferior products.
Worse, many bought potentially harmful devices.
