For a long time, India's role in the auto industry was defined by manufacturing.
EVs are changing that.
For the first time, India is genuinely building at the leading edge of an industry - the global light electric vehicle industry. From battery packs, software, fast charging to safety - intelligence, power electronics, vehicle software and embedded systems.
Much of this progress has been driven by startups and new age companies that have led the investments in product and deep technology - these investments have been the engine that has pulled the industry forward and put in full steam now (pun intended). Supporting these new age companies is critical if we want to sustain this momentum.
India has the talent, the scale, and the market. The opportunity now is to translate that into global tech leadership.
I shared a few thoughts on what it will take to get there, together with Aravind Mani (River Mobility) and Saurav Kumar (Euler Motors).

Great to see the GoI leading by example with the adoption of indigenously developed charging infra. This in particular is also built on indigenously developed charging standards, a first for India - LECCS.
Interoperable standards are critical to making EVs practical at scale. And it's critical for us all to adopt standards like these. It encourages domestic tech and domestic supply chains that are built around it.
A strong testament to India's deep-tech capabilities and a proud moment for everyone involved with building Ather Grid and LECCS over the years.

What next for Bhavish Aggarwal?
Ola Electric bet big on scale and vertical integration, but is facing serious challenges with sales down. service in shambles. Stock battered. Brand trust dented. 3,400 stores cut to 700.
And yet no one else in India is building cells, motors, and manufacturing infrastructure at this scale. The moat is real.
Turnaround is possible, but not without course correction.
The bear case - Small capacity isn't viable. Chinese pricing is ruthless. Customer trust, once broken at scale, rarely comes back cheap.
The bull case - Every hardware revolution looks like a disaster in the middle. Bhavish is building something India has never attempted. The pain is the price.
We’re now live with the second phase of the Ather Upgrade Program for our Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 owners at @atherenergy
The program first started in 2024 for some of our earliest community members in Bengaluru and Chennai. The response since then has been incredible. Close to 1,400 Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 owners have already moved to the newer Ather scooters.
A lot has changed over the years since the launch of our initial products. Both the hardware and software have evolved, and we’ve added a whole range of technologies and features that continue to define the kind of magical riding experiences Ather builds.
With Upgrade 2.0, the opportunity is now open to all Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 owners in Bengaluru. Owners can upgrade to the latest lineup – the Ather 450X, Ather 450 Apex, and the Ather Rizta.
