Technically, pandas are carnivores. But due to a mutation 4 million years ago, they lost the taste for meat.

So, bamboo & grasses became the primary diet of pandas.

However, pandas lack the inner biology to properly digest bamboo. They digest only 17 to 20% of the bamboo they eat.

As an adaptation, they have a low basal metabolic rate. They burn very little energy & move slowly, tumbling down instead of controlling their motor movement.

They spend over 12 hours eating, living in maximum energy conservation mode, leaving little energy for refined motor coordination.
