@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria@PoliceNG The measure of a society’s development, progressiveness & humanity is by the way it treats its most vulnerable & That’s the children of our society. When we don’t protect them, we’re lighting a match to our future which are the children of our society. #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria@PoliceNG Let’s take advantage of the opportunity we have no to break the silence on sexual violence and especially around child abuse because we cannot built a society upon the rubbled of Rot, let’s not only preach social morality but ensure we practice it. #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria We must remove the stigma of victims so they are able to come forth to report to the right authorities & seek help. Train @PoliceNG to be sensitive to victims as they are currently insensitive to GBV, their gender desk policy must be implemented across States #ChildRightsNG
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria As it stands now, the violence against persons act which protects survivors from perpetrators has only been domesticated in 2 Northern states. It blocks loopholes that exist in rape laws. There must be effective reporting mechanisms,& punitive measures #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria We must re-train teachers and principals around gender sensitivities and inclusivity. We must ensure there’s community involvement in schools as they’re the greatest stakeholders in education of its children #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria We must make learning attractive by incentivising pupils through creative means, by changing how we educate. The UBEC act stipulates punishment for wards that do not send children to school. We must domesticate these important acts #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica@EVA_Nigeria has been instrumental in the fight to address gender based violence in primary and secondary schools by pushing for policies such as the family life and HIV education. We will work on projecting their fight against GBV in schools #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica And this is why we must fuel advocacy through sensitisation by focusing on removing stigma and being relentless with schools that care more about their reputation than the children. We will also work around policy implementation for sustainability #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica Unfortunately, we have, through sensitisation rounds from state currently active in Borno and Niger states.
We have experienced pushbacks from schools that want to guard their reputations and parents that are afraid of stigma #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica The existence of this policy is a huge step, but implementation hasn’t been favourable. Not only must we ensure the domestication of the #CRA But we must ensure diligent implementation of the law at the state level #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
Imagine having a mother that is illiterate!
Imagine having a sister that cannot help her sibling with homework!
Imagine marrying an uneducated woman!
Imagine a girl, deprived access to quality education!
Imagine your sister been objectified!
#ArewaMeToo#ChildRightsNG#Atumeyi
@youthhubafrica The #CRA is a safe haven for children but unfortunately 13 states are yet to domesticate it, correct me if I’m wrong, and all these states are in Northern Nigeria. The pushback springs from the stipulated age of consent and around Almajiri issues #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica The Child rights act that was passed in 2003 exists to protect all children defined as any Nigeria below the age of 18. It protects them from discrimination, forced labour, assault and child marriage and mandates free universal basic education, to summarise the act #ChildRightsNG
Educating the girlchild is a necessity for every country or society that want to develop. A well educated girl-child will become a mother in the future that can best take care of her family. Healthwise, educationally, financially and morally.
#ArewaMeToo#ChildRightsNG#Atumeyi
A girl who is given out in marriage at a very tender age is placed at a very high risk. She is not matured to be a mother, without any skill, information & confidence that might lead to her being a better mother & wife if she were educated.
#ArewaMeToo#ChildRightsNG#Atumeyi
This is so true. We pay a lot of attention to religion than other aspects that concern human development. This is a sad situation because a lot of Nigerians pay too much attention to reliogion (which often becomes hypocrisy)and it affects development in all forms.
#ChildRightsNG
@youthhubafrica Ordinarily, when parents catch wave of the children being abused, they have a tendency to protect them and in cases of lower income families, that affects the child’s potential to return to school #ChildRightsNG#ArewaMeToo
@youthhubafrica While that might not be the entire picture to the reason for high number of school enrolment, it’s a great contributory factor. We have encountered many cases from our state leads of #ArewaMeToo where girls have told of their experiences of sexual abuse in school #ChildRightsNG
