You cannot have both fairness and NEET.
NEET is fundamentally unfair.

While I cannot speak for every state, I can certainly speak for Tamil Nadu. Every political party in Tamil Nadu except the BJP opposes NEET. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has repeatedly passed resolutions and Bills seeking exemption from NEET.

Stop defending the indefensible. #ScrapNEET once and for all.

Look out for my Op-ed in tomorrow's edition of @The_Hindu, where I set out in detail why NEET is fundamentally unfair and why it must be abolished.

Everyone is talking about Annamalai leaving BJP.
Nobody is asking the right question.

Let me ask it.

In 2024, Annamalai led Tamil Nadu for BJP.
BJP won zero seats.
He himself did not win.

In 2026, BJP's vote share in Tamil Nadu collapsed further.

The media is painting him as a victim.
Modi and Amit Shah as the villain.

I am not a BJP supporter.
I am not an Annamalai supporter.
I am not even Modi and Amit Shah supporter.
I support Bharat.

So let me tell you what the media is not telling you.

In May 2024, right in the middle of the Lok Sabha election campaign, Annamalai travelled to Delhi.
Not for a rally.
Not for party strategy.
For a selection interview.

For a fellowship offered by the UK government.
He got selected.

By September 2024, Annamalai was in Oxford.
He stayed there until December 2024.
Twelve weeks.
Fully residential.

The programme is called Chevening Gurukul Fellowship for Leadership and Excellence.
Hosted at Oxford University.
Department of Politics and International Relations.

Only 12 candidates are cherry picked from all of India.

Now here is what you need to know about this programme.

It is not run by Oxford.
It is funded entirely by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The same ministry that runs British foreign policy.

The programme has been running for 25 years.
It targets India's future political leaders, senior bureaucrats, journalists, NGO heads, and civil society figures.

That means, 300 carefully selected future Indian power-holders.
Shaped inside Oxford.
Funded by Whitehall.

Past alumni include sitting Union Cabinet ministers.
Senior Tata Group executives.
And now, Annamalai.

One stat worth sitting with.

Tamil Nadu NGOs received Rs 6,395 crore in foreign funds in just four years.

Second highest in India.
After Delhi.

I am not saying Annamalai did anything wrong.
I am not saying he was sent there for any hidden reason.
I am simply presenting facts.

But here is what I will watch in the next 18 months.

Watch if international English-language media gives his new movement disproportionate coverage.
Watch if Western think tanks invite him to speak.
Watch if NGOs with foreign funding quietly support his ground operations.
Watch if his Oxford policy paper surfaces in any British foreign policy publication.

I have no verdict on Annamalai.
I have no personal agenda against him.

But I do have questions.

Maybe I am wrong.

Maybe this is a BJP strategy to rebuild in Tamil Nadu through a friendly outsider.

But here is what history tells us.

Britain lost India in 1947.
It never lost its networks.

The question is not whether Annamalai is right or wrong for India.

The question is: who benefits if he succeeds?
That answer will become clear.
Sooner than you think.

தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் நிதிநிலை பற்றி கடந்த பிப்ரவரி மாத பட்ஜெட்லயே தெளிவா நாங்க சொல்லிட்டோம். அது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியாதா? அதுக்குப் பிறகுதான நீங்க பல வாக்குறுதிகளை மக்களுக்குக் கொடுத்தீங்க? உங்களுக்கு வாக்களித்த மக்களை மீண்டும் ஏமாற்றி திசைதிருப்பாதீங்க!

Is there even a shred of social responsibility in anything anymore? 41 lives have been lost, and instead of showing basic humanity, it’s being reduced to cheap political drama with cinematic dialogues. Now, even Ponraj’s statement is being twisted for yet another round of disgraceful politics despite the fact that he has no connection whatsoever with the DMK.

The language used by Ponraj in public is undoubtedly vulgar and deserves clear condemnation. For that, even a simple complaint from an ordinary party worker would have been sufficient. But what we are witnessing instead is a so called ‘virtual warrior’ leader, pretending to champion women’s concerns, while his followers stoop to degrading and disrespecting women across the board.

In all of this, the kind of petty and distasteful politics being played makes Vijay’s actions appear even more repulsive to me than Ponraj’s words themselves.

Jayaraj kept his mobile shop open past 9pm during lockdown.

Police came. Took him away.

His son Bennix heard about it and rushed to the station to check on his father.

They let him in.

Then locked the door.

Both were stripped. Tied down on a wooden table. Beaten with lathis every 10 minutes through the night.

Their blood splattered the walls.

The next morning police took them to a doctor who gave them a fitness certificate.

Then to a magistrate who remanded them to jail without even looking at them properly.

Bennix died on June 22. Jayaraj died on June 23.

Yesterday a court found all 9 police officers guilty of murder.

It took 6 years.

Sentencing is on March 30.

The FIR said Jayaraj and Bennix rolled on the ground and used obscene language.

CCTV from the shop next door showed nothing of that sort happened.

The case against them was completely fabricated.

They died for a crime they never committed.

According to a report by the National Human Rights Commission of India, 40,000 children are abducted each year, leaving 11,000 untraced.

Trafficking of children and forcing them into child labour is a serious issue in Bihar. According to the 2011 census, 6.5 million children in the age group of 5-14 work in the unorganized sector, and among them, 11 per cent are from Bihar. In villages like the one where Dharmender grew up, opportunities are scarce, and everyone lives in poverty.

Between 2011 and 2013, more than 10,500 children were registered as missing from the central state of Chhattisgarh, one of India’s poorest states.

In the first 15 days of 2026, Delhi reported 807 missing persons - 509 women and girls and 298 men - with 572 still untraced.

Children and adolescents are heavily affected. In 2025 alone, 24,508 people went missing, including 14,870 women, showing a decade - long rise and 52,000 unresolved cases.

Nearly 1.4 lakh children were reported missing as of 2023, with most aged 12–18 years.

Teenagers form the bulk of cases: 12–16-year-olds account for roughly 48,500, while 16–18-year-olds make up about 69,800.

Younger children under 12 number around 20,000.

A large number of children and women trafficked for #SexualExploitation in India.

Such trafficking in India has become a substantial international business and, unless legislating and executing strong laws and stringent action was taken, it is unlikely to slow down.

Additionally, it has given an opportunity for the enormous potential profits for those syndicates that were set up for organized crimes and independent traffickers.

The Bengal unit of the #BJP - Bharatiya Janata Party has removed the general secretary of its women’s wing after she was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department from Darjeeling district for alleged child trafficking.

In 2007, taking note of the naming of some MPs in a human trafficking case, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Sunday said such allegations were of a serious and grave nature and the matter could come up at a meeting of leaders of all political parties convened by him.

In the human trafficking case allegedly involving BJP MP Babubhai Katara, one of the arrested persons has named three other MPs whom he claimed to have introduced to travel agents suspected to behind the racket.
