Happy Fall! With today being the first day of Autumn, we wanted to highlight one of our fall-harvested teas - our Aged Wild White Tea. Harvested from wild growing tea trees in the fall of 2010, this bigger leaf white tea has a silky smooth texture, a balanced flavor with honey undertones, and a clean feel and finish with a naturally fragrant aroma. If you haven't tried our Aged Wild White Tea (or if you have but it's been a while), it is definitely one to check out! #shangtea
This is around the time of year when Oriental Beauty Wu-Long (aka Oolong) tea is harvested. Known by multiple names, including Champagne Wu-Long, in Taiwanese Mandarin it is referred to as Bai Hao, which means "White-Tipped," due to the white or lighter-colored tips of the tea buds.
The leaves that make up our Oriental Beauty Wu-Long are harvested around this time of year for a very specific, unusual, and necessary reason - to allow bugs to chew on the leaves. Tea farmers wait until May or June for a certain type of bug, commonly referred to as "green leaf hoppers," to chew on the leaves. When the bugs chew on the leaves, the plants release compounds called terpenes, which cause the leaves to eventually take on a more noticeable and natural floral and fruity aroma, along with a smooth honey-like flavor with a floral undertone. #orientalbeauty #oolong #shangtea
Happy Lunar New Year! While our new year in the U.S. begins on January 1st, the new year for many east Asian cultures begins today, January 29th. The calendar that we tend to follow in the U.S. (the Gregorian calendar) is based off of a solar schedule, while the calendar used in these east Asian cultures follows more of a lunar schedule, with the start of the new year dependent upon when the second new moon after the winter solstice of the northern hemisphere occurs (usually between late January and mid February).
Within these east Asian cultures, every year within a twelve year cycle is linked to one of twelve animals, in this order: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. The legend of how this started is that the Jade Emperor invited twelve animals to a feast, and the order that the animals arrived determined the order of the animals in the twelve year cycle.
Today begins the year of the snake. We currently have unglazed porcelain cups that feature the twelve different animals and their corresponding Chinese character. These cups hold approximately 3.5 ounces and are available in the shop and online at https://t.co/N2a3OzD77o.
