I hear you, and I don’t doubt your intent or your commitment to minorities. But respect also means being honest with each other, especially in moments like this.

On the ground, shops of Muslims are being vandalised and there are already rumours of a Muslim TMC worker being killed. In such a situation, when you say “let’s not waste our prayers,” it comes across as deeply hurtful. It sounds less like political frustration and more like abandoning people who are already under attack.

You mentioned AJUP and ISF damage, and yes, every election has factors. But can an entire community be blamed for a few seats? By your own party’s numbers and independent estimates, nearly 90% of Muslim voters still backed TMC. That's the total consolidation of Muslim votes for TMC. Muslim candidates also won in large numbers. So where is the betrayal?

Concerns should not selectively apply to a few seats where results are inconvenient.

It’s also important to ask harder questions inward. How did the BJP expand its space in Bengal at all? What role did soft Hindutva politics, temple spending with public money, allowing RSS proliferation and alleged Waqf mismanagement play in alienating sections of voters?

And when alternative voices like AIMIM enter the fray, most of the time Muslim voters in a state still consolidate behind regional parties, TMC in Bengal, Samajwadi in UP, to avoid splitting the anti-BJP vote. As a result, parties like Owaisi’s often end up with little to no gains and yet they are quickly labelled a “B-team.” That framing dismisses legitimate political agency. Disagreement is fair, but delegitimising voters is not.

No one is asking for certificates, and none are being given. But in a moment where people are facing violence and fear, the language we use matters. Accountability cannot be one-sided, and solidarity cannot be conditional.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Many world leaders have assembled for the military parade in Beijing, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, DPRK leader Kim Jong Un, Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel, Vietnamese President Luong Cuong, Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, and many more.

Historians in the West have largely written China out of the narrative of World War II, but outside the West people know that China was the first country to wage war against fascist occupation, and the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was of decisive importance to the overall global victory over fascism.

Without China’s endurance, Japan might have overrun Asia and invaded the Soviet Union. Instead, it was forced into a prolonged war of attrition, limiting its capacity elsewhere and buying vital time for the Allies. In the course of 14 years of war (1931-45), China suffered over 35 million casualties, and around 20 percent of its people were made refugees.

As Putin commented a few days ago: "The peoples of the Soviet Union and China bore the brunt of the fighting and suffered the heaviest losses. It was our citizens who endured the greatest hardships in the struggle against the invaders and played a decisive role in defeating Nazism and militarism."

China’s victory resonated far beyond its borders. Japan’s defeat gave impetus to anti-colonial forces across Asia. Within weeks of surrender, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was founded. In Korea, liberation from Japanese rule led directly to the founding of the Democratic People’s Republic in 1948. Across South and Southeast Asia, nationalist movements drew inspiration from China’s long resistance.

The courage, sacrifice, daring and strategic brilliance demonstrated by the Chinese people in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression form an indelible chapter in the history of the struggle for a world free from fascism, militarism, colonialism and imperialism.
