Alexander the Great's architect, Dinocrates of Rhodes, proposed one of the most ambitious monuments ever conceived: carving the entire Mount Athos into a colossal statue of Alexander.

According to the Roman architect Vitruvius, the design showed Alexander holding a city in one hand while the other held a giant bowl to collect mountain streams, creating a self-supplying water source. Alexander admired the proposal but asked a practical question: where would the city's inhabitants grow their food?

When Dinocrates admitted he had not considered agriculture, Alexander rejected the project, believing that even the grandest city could not survive without fertile land.

He later entrusted Dinocrates with designing Alexandria in Egypt, whose location was chosen for its excellent harbor, access to the Nile, fertile surroundings, and strategic position on Mediterranean trade routes.
