Your success as a YouTuber or Streamer is honestly determined by your ability to block out the voice in your head that tells you to be lazy
The one that says you should:
- Edit Later
- Record Later
- Script Later
- Thumbnail Later, etc.
I know people with crazy potential, but they're lazy af
They're getting passed up by Creators who want success more than anything else
Some of you will read this, and it'll change how you think for 2026
But most of you will read it and still be lazy

Below is everything you need to know about YouTube’s New Midrolls update
It’s a long Tweet, so get ready!
Summary if you don’t like reading:
This is a GOOD Update from YouTube and it gives Creators more insight on how the Ad System has always worked
They made a huge mistake in delivering this news to us, and are working on fixing that
Alright, let’s get started.
What’s going on?
To catch you up to speed. Last month YouTube announced they’re changing how Ads work for Creators
They essentially said Midroll Slots that are considered ‘interruptive’ won’t get ads to play during a video
What’s that mean:
Interruptive Ad: This type of Ad may appear mid-sentence or during a key moment in a video, and increases the likelihood of Viewers clicking off your video.
Non-Interruptive Ad: This type of Ad appears during Natural Breaks in your video, like Pauses or Transitions, it’s a better experience for Viewers.
YouTube wants less Interruptive Ads and More Non-Interruptive ones
What’s the issue?
Well YouTube delivered this news to Creators last month horribly and they faced immediate backlash because of it.
Creators were writing huge threads, making videos, etc.
Everyone was worried they’d start making less money, but that’s YouTube’s fault because they literally made it seem that way.
Creators were going to old videos and seeing a majority of their Midrolls marked in Red as Interruptive, basically saying these Ads won’t play anymore
So Creators started stressing out
YouTube’s Apology:
They straight up apologized to me and said they did a bad job delivering this news to Creators
I told them how they could’ve done it better, and they’ll be doing that soon
In reality, this is a GREAT update and below I explain why
What the New Update ACTUALLY is:
This new update allows us to see what YouTube’s Ad System has ALWAYS thought
Yes, you read that correctly…
YouTube’s Ad System has ALWAYS considered if an Midroll is Interruptive when deciding if it’ll play or not, but they just never showed us that until now.
I still don’t get what you mean..
Basically, this Interruptive/Non-Interruptive concept was always something that YouTube considered, but they’re finally showing it to us
So if your videos have tons of Red Interruptive Ad Slots in them, it means YouTube was more than likely NEVER running Ads there to begin with
EVEN if we thought they did, they likely didn’t.
The System has ALWAYS been like this, but YouTube finally decided to show Creators how it works
What’s YouTube’s goal here:
Funny enough, YouTube actually wants Creators to make MORE Money
Before, Creators would place Ad Slots randomly, and not know if they were even bringing extra revenue
There were False Myths like: Every 1 in 5 Midroll plays, etc.
Now YouTubers can know if their Midrolls are even being shown in the first place
And if they aren’t, they can modify it so there’s a better chance of them running
You can do this by placing different Midroll Ads or using their Automated System
Their Automated System will get WAY better in May btw :)
Again. The Ad System has ALWAYS worked this way but YouTube never showed us
Why’s YouTube telling us now:
YouTube realized that some Creators are earning less Revenue because they don’t know how the Ad System works
They WANT us to make more money by saying, “Hey this Ad is interruptive and probably won’t play, you should move it”
The system has always worked this way but they’re finally giving us a look inside
Better Slots = Higher likelihood of Ads playing, which makes you more money
The more money Creators make = the more money YouTube makes.
Everyone wins.
What Determines if an Ad Plays:
YouTube’s Ad System looks at several factors like:
1. How many Ads a viewer saw before your video (Ads in the last video they watched, if a Pre-roll played, etc.)
This is important because if a Viewer gets too many Ads, they’ll get overwhelmed and probably close the app. We don’t want that.
2. If the Ad is Interruptive to the content (Shows up mid-sentence, etc.)
3. Things about your Audience (Their Location, Interests, What Device they’re watching from, etc.)
4. Advertiser Demand: Sometimes Advertisers REALLY want to pay to get in front of a specific Audience.
This is why CPMs are usually so high in December (Advertisers are spending more) and drop off drastically in January (Advertisers are spending less)
YouTube’s Ad System balances these 3 things:
- Advertiser Satisfaction
- Help YouTube/Creators make Money
- Keep Viewers on the website
So for example: It can look at your Midroll Slot and think, ‘If an Ad plays here, a Viewer will likely click off the video'
and then may not play an Ad there because it has to balance everything
General Summary of Everything:
This is a GOOD Update from YouTube that gives Creators insight into how YouTube’s Ad System has ALWAYS worked
None of this is something new that never existed before
It always existed. YouTube just never told us, until now
So if you see a lot of Red Ad Slots on any of your videos right now, they more than likely were NEVER playing to begin with
Anything you were upset about, isn’t worth being upset about

This is a braindead change. Gaming/commentary channels are going to be fucked by YouTube if we don't artificially create time in the video for YouTube to put ads in it. The current system they're pushing quite literally does not work for channels in our niches. Who thinks of this and signs off at @TeamYouTube?
Just finished a meeting with YouTube about their New Midrolls Update
[this will be a long Tweet, please Like/RT]
The situation is currently worse than I thought
But YouTube wants to work with me to figure it out, so I'll be sending them a bunch of feedback
What's Happening:
Starting May 12th YouTube will no longer let Creators manually place Ads wherever they want in their videos
What’s This Mean:
Ads will have to be approved by YouTube as Non-Interruptive Ads
Interruptive Ad: This Ad appears for viewers in the middle of a sentence, when something big is happening in a video, etc.
Non-Interruptive Ad: An Ad that only shows up during Natural Breaks (like Pauses, Transitions, etc.)
Why is YouTube doing this:
YouTube believes showing Ads that don't interrupt the viewing experience will increase Views and Revenue
Now at first glance, this makes sense... BUT
Why this is horrible:
Many YouTubers, especially Gaming ones, edit their videos so there's No Deadspace, No Pauses, No moments where the viewer can get bored, etc.
There’s entire Niches on YouTube designed to keep the viewer hooked the whole time
For these Creators, since there are no Natural Pauses or Transitions, YouTube’s system will mark most Manual Midroll Ads as interruptive
Gaming Creators will probably earn way less revenue
YouTube’s Solution:
They said to let YouTube’s systems automatically determine the best place to put Ads for your video if your Manual ones aren’t being approved
But if you’re a YouTuber, you know how bad their Automatic Ads System is
It usually places Ads in the most random spots. Sometimes the first Ad being 10+ minutes into the video, which results in WAY less money being made because Viewers don’t get served that Ad
And for Gaming Creators, the system might still find ZERO suitable Ad Slots even with the automatic system, which is horrible
So I asked YouTube about this scenario:
I straight up asked them if people like Gaming Creators will earn less money if YouTube can’t find Non-Interruptive Ad slots in their videos
and they basically implied that Yes, these Creators will earn less money…
I was even told that if making revenue through Midrolls is important to you
Then you should consider changing how you make videos to include things like Natural Breaks, Natural Pauses, etc.
I’m normally the biggest advocate of YouTube but I couldn’t believe this when I heard it
Many Creators will make less money going forward if this goes through
What happens to your old videos?
Any videos that you uploaded in the past, WILL be affected
YouTube won’t show Interruptive Ads to viewers anymore after May 12th
They’ll only show Ads when there are Natural Spaces/Breaks in your video
So if you have old videos that bring you passive revenue monthly
And YouTube can’t find any suitable ad slots in them..
Those videos will start earning significantly less money.
Where we’re at now:
- Nothing is changing until May
- YouTube wants to work with me to gain feedback
- We can fix this before it goes into effect
The fact YouTube is willing to listen to Creator Feedback on this means anything is possible
It looks really bad right now but I think they’re slowly realizing that
DM me if you want me to pass anything to YouTube
I've been making YouTube videos for 16 years. This is one of the worst YouTube product changes I have ever seen lmao
I cannot stress enough how anti-creator this is tbqh; @nealmohan@YouTubeInsider I'm begging you guys to reconsider this. There are just so many reasons why it's dreadful:
- I have 2000+ videos on my channel. Going back through all these vids and re-placing ads will take FOREVER
- YouTube's automatic ad placement has historically been so bad that trusting that same algo to decide what is and isn't interruptive is a recipe for disaster. It WILL NOT get it right
- What is "interruptive" timing in one language might not even be interruptive in another. You're pushing multi track audio but this change flies in the face of usage of that feature...
- It's going to massively add to the amount of work we have to do for all future videos to correctly place ads. A 5% revenue uplift isn't gonna mean anything to thousands of small creators when you're giving them so much more faff to deal with per long upload
Make the "interruptive ads" flag something you need to opt INTO on a per video basis to get the revenue uplift, not forced on by default, and definitely not forced onto past content. It's that simple. Please. @TeamYouTube
1.4 million views, and they won't let me place Mid-Roll ads on it after this new YouTube update.
For the love of God, PLEASE @TeamYouTube give creators the option to place interruptive ads if there aren't any natural breakpoints. I might unironically lose my job, house, and financial security over this.
For those that don't understand how ad placements work, each timestamp (as seen in the second video) gives you around a 1/5 chance to play an advert. So on average, most creators place them every 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 intervals depending on video length. With this new change, you physically CANNOT PLACE ADS if your content has seamless speaking throughout, since the automatic ad placement is terrible and won't actually locate a suitable space for you.
This is an incredibly serious matter, any YouTube creator doing cut-commentary or that has minimal "silent" parts in a video will lose access to a majority of their ad revenue after May 12th 2025 when this change goes live. I know on the surface it "seems" like a good change - not interrupting speech with an ad break - but this will single-handedly ruin thousands of people's lives if this goes through.
Completely unacceptable, and arguably the worst change in YouTube History.
REVERT IT.
