The way the church father's functioned in their attempt to make sense of theological issues, was akin to Yahweh telling Israel to go sit at the feet of the pagan nations and learn their wisdom so that they could then filter Yahweh's revelation through "natural philosophical reasoning" in order to better understand Yahweh, His nature, and His creation.

Some of the most ardent "theologians" seem to want to continue to double down on this, at best, foolishness.

And, before you say, "But the Greeks were far superior than the rank pagans of the ANE." Oh really?

Socrates characterizes himself as a sexual predator he is so aroused by the sight of the muscular nude form of Charmides.

Aristotle thought women were inferior "mutilated male" but were necessary to procreation. In other words, Aristotle, like Socrates, was sexually aroused by young men (I'm being charitable here).

Now we come to the church fathers.

Athanasius believed the sin of Adam and Eve was to choose the body (animal nature) over the higher calling of a "spiritual" communion with God (clearly gnostic influence here).

Augustine, arguably by some, the greatest theologian of the first thousand years of the church, abandon his wife and son, believe that sexual arousal within the context of marriage was sin, and tried to live a celibate life even though he was married.

And this barely scratches the surface.

Pagan speculations and philosophies ALWAYS corrupt. Every single time.

Lest I be remiss, Thomas Aquinas, after having an experience of seeing the Lord Jesus Himself, counted everything that he had written as straw. A clear reference to the book of 1st Corinthians and the testing of a man's work, whether it can withstand the fire of God's presence.
