Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Palestinians had the right to defend themselves against the Israel occupiers, and the Southeast Asian nation wouldn’t sever ties with Palestine because of U.S. pressure.

Speaking in the nation's parliament on Tuesday, Mr Ibrahim compared the militant group to Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress' struggle to overturn apartheid in South Africa as he vowed to maintain ties.

"Palestine is colonised through apartheid, ethnic cleansing and now genocide. Hence, whatever happened is the legitimate right and struggle of the Palestinian people," he said.

"We continue our relations with Hamas, before and now, and we do not consider, punish Hamas as a terrorist organisation."

In a defiant answer to a question from a member of an opposition party, Mr Ibrahim also dismissed the prospect of US sanctions for his outspoken support and claimed any action would be "not valid" under United Nations rules.

"I will not accept any threats, including this," he said.

"This action is unilateral and not valid, because we as members of the United Nations only recognise decisions made by the UN Security Council."
