The Wall Street Journal’s front page story of the alleged famine in Gaza includes a lengthy video by reporter Feliz Solomon. While she mentions the looting of almost all the UN aid trucks entering Gaza, she fails to note that 9 out of 10 UN drivers are selected by Hamas which knows exactly where the trucks are headed and precisely what aid they’re carry. That way, Hamas cannot be directly accused of looting. It can steal the food and make millions selling it to Gazans at exorbitant prices. Hamas can create food shortages that intensify international pressure on Israel.

Solomon also fails to mention the US-run and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation which has distributed some 12 million meals to Gaza in more than 2,000 trucks, none of which has been looted.

Solomon’s clip included images of shrouded infants who, she claims, died of hunger-related causes. Exactly no proof is provided for these charges—an egregious oversight in light of Hamas’s well-documented campaign to present children with serious preexisting conditions as victims of starvation.

Such tendentious reporting strengthens Hamas and furthers its goal of increasing civilian suffering in order to further demonize Israel.

I expect more accurate coverage from the Journal, but I also expect more professionalism from the IDF Spokesman. During my recent tour of the same aid depot Solomon visited, the IDF made no effort to explain Israel’s position to the English-speaking journalists present. I overhead one crew filming its report saying, “This is what the Israeli army wants the world to see while it’s starving Gazans.”

Let’s make it clear: we, the majority that you won’t see on CNN, BBC, or Al Jazeera, Muslims and Arabs in the Middle East, don’t see Israel as the enemy. We don’t trust and will never stand with the Islamic regime in Iran. It wasn’t Israel; it was Iran that fired missiles at Mecca, the holiest site in Islam. It’s Iran that has illegally occupied three UAE islands since 1971. You think Gaza is bad? You’re out protesting for a cause you barely understand, trapped in trendy hashtags and fed propaganda by Muslim Brotherhood terrorists who parrot Iran’s lies. So let me educate you:

Not in Gaza, but in Syria, 656,000+ dead, 13.3 million displaced, 16.7 million in need of aid, and it’ll cost 250 to 400 billion dollars to rebuild what Iran’s militias destroyed.

In Iraq, Iran dragged it into an 8-year war that killed up to 1 million people, and today, over 1 million remain displaced, with 88 billion dollars needed just to recover.
In Yemen, Tehran’s Houthi puppets killed up to 377,000, starved millions, displaced 4.5 million, and left 21.6 million begging for food. 3,774 children were killed, 7,245 injured, all while Iran grinned behind closed doors.

In Sudan, Africa, Iran sponsors and supports the Muslim Brotherhood-led army. Since April 15, 2023, they have killed 80,000 children and women through airstrikes using Iranian weapons and have starved 5 million people. And yes, you don't know about it. You didn’t even post about it. You see, even when you say "Black lives matter," you're a liar—because you did nothing for those Black lives in Sudan.

Syria starves, Iraq limps, Yemen, Sudan bleeds, and yet no one protests. Why? Because you’re hostages to trends, blind to truth, and echoing narratives designed in Tehran and polished by the Muslim Brotherhood’s media machine. When we say we’re against war and for peace, we mean it. Iran doesn’t. It wants peace only inside its borders, while it exports war to every Arab family.

And now it’s exporting terror to the UK and US, where MI6 and the CIA have arrested Iranian-linked terrorists. And let’s not forget, Iran begged for a ceasefire after just 12 days, yet ordered Hamas terrorists to reject one. Iran doesn’t care about Gaza, it cares about control. The real tragedy? Those filthy Muslim Brotherhood agents in Gaza sold their people to Tehran’s interests.

We in the Gulf cherish civilized nations, those we embrace, normalize with, and build a brighter future alongside. But Iran? Its hands are still stained with blood. Its actions speak of destruction, not progress.
Even when Tehran threatened Qatar’s sovereignty and we saw it as an attack on all the GCC, we stood firm, not for war, but for principle, for peace. So yes, Iran owes the region trust, apologies, and real repair. Not slogans. Not theatrics. A huge, massive, and meaningful change for the better.
The Islamic regime in Iran shattered the Middle East and now wants applause? We’re not clapping. We’re done.
Look at the UAE. We reached Mars. We aim for the Moon. We’re racing toward the next frontier: artificial intelligence, the oil of tomorrow. That is what progress looks like. So if you're going to copy something, copy greatness. At least try.

I've now had a chance to read this cover story @NYMag by @suzyhans from start to finish. Because the article is about 10,000 words in length & 20 pages of text, it will be a while before I can put together a full analysis.

Here's the short version: there is not a legitimate, doctrinal analysis of an actual "war crime" in the entire article. Not one.

This should come as a surprise for an article with a central premise that "the term war crime is not even adequate for what's happening in Gaza, in that it suggests that there is a war happening and there are some crimes in it." The writer continues this reflection by asserting "the number of war crimes" being committed in this conflict is "virtually incalculable" and that the conflict "is not really a war but rather a ceaseless pummeling of one side by another."

And yet, not one single doctrinal articulation of what a "war crime" actually is. I suggested above that this should come as a surprise. But as someone with extensive experience with the law of armed conflict in the applied context who has also studied for quite some time the way #LOAC is portrayed in media coverage, encountering extensive deficiencies in this article sadly is no surprise at all.

It is coverage like this that motivated me to apply to & enroll in a journalism program as a grad student - so I can learn to see the world in the way a journalist does. In the process, I'm starting to learn not only what the media so often gets wrong, but now why it does so.

In all my time so far studying systemic deficiencies in how the media covers international law in armed conflict, this article is among the most deficient. For aspiring journalists interested in covering this subject in your career, you should consider this cover story as a template for what not to do.

Because of the sheer length of the article and current competing personal priorities, it may be a while before I can present a thorough analysis of the myriad deficiencies in this story. Even then, I may need to just pick the top 5 to analyze in depth and summarize the rest.

For now, here's the bottom line. Any news article that makes such sweeping allegations regarding "war crimes" without once presenting a legitimate, doctrinal analysis to support this claim should be regarded as suspicious from the outset. In terms of covering international law involving armed conflict, this cover story from New York Magazine is, from start to finish, yet another example of legal disinformation in public discourse - and among the worst examples at that.
