When I heard that Uber was leaving Nigeria after 12 years, I made a sarcastic post congratulating APC and President Tinubu for the good work they are doing.

I knew the usual suspects would come. They always do.

One person quickly told me Uber was leaving because of competition. According to him, Bolt and inDrive had taken over, inDrive lowered its prices, Uber couldn't compete, so they packed their bags.

And I knew exactly where the conversation was going.

Anything to make sure we don't discuss the Nigerian economy or the people managing it.

Uber announced on September 2, 2026 that it was ending operations in Nigeria, a market it entered in 2014. Uber itself did not say inDrive reduced prices and chased it out. It said the decision followed a review of its business.

Reuters, while reporting the exit, gave important context. Competition has increased, but so have fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility, all of which have increased operating expenses for drivers and ride-hailing companies.

That matters.

Because competition is hardly new to Uber.

Go to South Africa today.

Uber, Bolt, and inDrive are there.

In fact, South Africa is a beautiful example because inDrive is using the same affordability strategy people are claiming chased Uber out of Nigeria.

Business Day reported just last month that Uber, Bolt and inDrive are competing heavily in South Africa, especially for price-sensitive customers. inDrive's model allows passengers to propose fares and drivers to negotiate them. Bolt has cheaper products. Uber itself has responded with lower-cost options.

Uber is still there.

South Africa has around 100,000 e-hailing drivers and more than two million passengers, and Uber continues fighting for its share of that market.

Go to the United Kingdom.

Uber is still operating there while Bolt operates in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Cardiff and several other cities. Both companies are fighting for the same passengers and drivers.

Uber has been competing with Ola and other local platforms for years.

Then in February 2026, the Indian government itself backed the launch of Bharat Taxi, a new ride-hailing service created to challenge companies like Uber and Ola.

More than 250,000 drivers had already enrolled.

Imagine a government-backed competitor entering your market with a model that does not charge drivers commission.

Uber's response?

It welcomed what it called healthy competition and remained in India.

Even in America, Uber is facing pressure from Lyft and a completely different threat from companies such as Waymo and Tesla moving into robotaxis. Reuters reported today that Uber plans to invest more than $10 billion in autonomous vehicle technology as it responds to that competition.

So please, competition alone is not some magical explanation that should end the Nigerian conversation.

The more interesting question is why competition becomes much harder when you are operating inside an economy where almost everything required to provide the service keeps becoming more expensive.

The Uber driver buys Nigerian petrol.

He buys tyres at Nigerian prices.

He repairs his car here.

Many of the spare parts he needs are affected by the exchange rate.

His insurance, servicing and everyday living expenses have risen.

Then the passenger opening the app is also struggling.

Her salary has not increased at the same rate as food, rent, electricity and transport.

She wants a cheaper ride.

The driver needs a higher fare.

The platform is sitting between both of them trying to make the numbers work.

How exactly do you discuss that business without discussing the economy?

Reuters literally mentioned rising fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility in its report about Uber's exit.

Even Nigeria's own former Finance Minister under Tinubu, Wale Edun, acknowledged the problem as far back as June 2, 2024.

I think hearing this verse was the first time I really understood Christianity as being about God's grace and mercy, not laws and commandments.

While it is good to live well and do no evil, nothing I/we will ever do will be enough, and the grace is given in ways and reasons beyond my/our comprehension and control.

I experienced a miracle that day that had to make the point clear. Not by power of might. Not by righteousness or obeying laws. It is all by grace.

Suffering the most humiliating form of death and overcoming it by resurrection was to show us that there is nothing that grace cannot overcome.

Studying the scripture is one thing; understanding it is another. I heard that verse from a devotional, and it made me realize that Christianity is also about a life of study and learning.

All the prayers, novenas, and rosary sessions (which are necessary for meditation and discipline) could not have revealed this to me without study.

Every day, for years now, someone asks me the same question: "How much are the Israelis paying you?" As if the only explanation for defending Jews and Israel is a paycheck. The idea that I might simply see this conflict differently doesn't compute for them. What I do is, to me, entirely normal. It only looks strange in a world where hating Jews has become the default setting of the crowd, and staying silent, or joining in, is what passes for sanity.

Many are familiar with this photograph from the Lviv pogrom, 1941. Locals — including a child and an adolescent — chase a woman stripped of her clothes, bleeding, terrified, humiliated. The Nazis had spent years demonizing the Jews before this moment. They didn't need to pull the trigger themselves. They just needed to make the target "legitimate," and ordinary people did the rest, voluntarily. Something otherwise suppressed in them came out, and they let it.

On October 7, I woke up to the videos. One of them was of Naama Levy, arms zip-tied behind her back, dragged by her dusty hair out of a black jeep. As she was moved to the front of the car, she looked straight into the camera of the man filming her. The back of her trousers was soaked in blood. I saw the cuts on her arms, her bare feet, and I watched a crowd film her while cursing her, spitting on her, hitting her. I wished I did not have an imagination. When the final result came, gues who won the local government?- APC. When inec stopped uploading result, report came that akpabio and Oshiomhole were at inec office. And they were changing things. Obaseki(the previous governor), went there himself. He was driven out by police. Obaseki in his last meeting which was held in uk said; what his eyes saw that night, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He just gave up on Nigeria. He said he saw place chiefs, top national and state politicians all in inecs office thumbprinting ballot papers and signing documents. Westerners will lead you to master one thing. Once you become good at it, they’ll introduce another. The goal is to keep you perpetually trying to prove yourself to them while they strategically maintain their position as cultural and intellectual thought leaders.

They do this across various forms of technology, sociopolitical ideologies like democracy, and social issues such as climate change. You see it in religion, medicine, nutrition, intellectual property, and countless other fields. So they don't just become the winners, they define what winning or loosing should look like.

Africans need to stop demonizing the West for the sake of it and start paying attention to the strategy—how they continually position themselves as the ones who tell us what should be priority.
