Although military members will get backpay in the event of a government shutdown, it does not help the junior Soldier with a family that lives paycheck to paycheck. Make sure that your Soldiers are tracking the choices that are available to them, so that they are not dealing with financial stress in a vacuum of information:

USAA and Navy Federal will offer members the ability for a 0% interest rate loan for the paycheck. Essentially, SMs would still get paid, but my USAA and when their pay hits USAA would recoup the money.

Army Emergency Relief (AER @aerhq) is an option for SM to request assistance.

Commissaries and @shopmyexchange will stay open, and often offer lower prices than the stores on the economy.

Routine medical and behavioral health appointments could be interrupted.

Child Development Centers (CDC), or daycare, will be open on a case by case basis depending on installation. Soldiers should call and see if they will be open.

This is one of those times that leaders should absolutely lead from a place of empathy. Soldiers go through a lot of stress just from being in the Army...not knowing about the well being of their family and finances is a whole other level of stress.

Do what you can to ensure your people are informed and taken care of.
