most deep tech founders walk into a fundraise asking the wrong question.

"how much should i raise?"

yesterday we hosted @watertyp3 from @Stellaris_VP for cohort 9 at @residencyBLR, and he made us realise the better question is "what's the next milestone, and what's the cheapest money that gets me there?"

he said - "raise equity only when the next milestone costs more than revenue or grants can fund"

and there's more grant money out there than most founders think. BIRAC gives up to ₹50 lakh for biotech. iDEX goes up to ₹1.5 crore for defence and aerospace.

then there's the money hiding in your own work.

for example a fusion startup. before you build the reactor, you have to build superconducting magnets, and those can be sold to MRI makers in year 2.

and by the time you're actually pitching a VC for seed or Series A, you're not asking them to fund a dream. you're asking them to fund you for getting the thing out of the lab and into the field.

and they'll just check two things:

> will someone pay for it?
> does it still work outside the lab?

doing well on just one rarely gets the round closed.
