Recently, Bureau of Reclamation crews completed an important maintenance operation atop Shasta Dam using the historic gantry crane, which has been in service since 1943. The crane safely positioned a man basket, allowing personnel to access the coaster gate slot for Shasta Powerplant Unit 4โan area that requires specialized equipment to reach.
During the inspection, crews removed obsolete structural brackets that could have interfered with the hydraulic tubing used to operate the coaster gate. Eliminating these potential obstructions helps ensure the gate can cycle smoothly and reliably for years to come.
This behind-the-scenes maintenance plays a vital role in preserving the safety, reliability, and long-term performance of Shasta Dam, helping support water delivery, hydroelectric power generation, and downstream resource management throughout the region.

Last week, the 21st @forestservice Chief Tom Schultz and his team participated in a tour of Shasta Dam lead by the Northern California Area Office Manager Elizabeth Hadley.
The Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Forest Service have a long-standing partnership that is dedicated to protecting natural resources, enhancing recreation, and restoring ecosystems across the West.
From collaborative watershed restoration projects along the Central Valley Project, to joint efforts improving forest health and water quality, this partnership ensures that public lands and water resources are managed responsibly for future generations.

Shasta Dam is made up of 16,900 concrete blocks, each measuring 50 feet by 50 feet by 5 feet. The blocks were part of one of the most ambitious engineering projects in U.S. history.
Construction began in 1938, and workers started pouring concrete in July 1940. Using 8-cubic-yard steel buckets suspended from a cableway system, crews worked around the clock for four and a half years, placing more than 6.5 million cubic yards of concrete.
Completed in 1945 โ 22 months ahead of schedule โ Shasta Dam became the second-largest concrete dam in the United States and a keystone of the Central Valley Project. It provided critical hydropower during World War II and continues to support Californiaโs water and power needs today.

Safety then and now at Shasta Powerplant
In 1944, a massive rotor was lowered into place for the first time in Unit 4 at the Shasta Powerplant, marking a key moment in the facilityโs history.
Today, those machines are still in operation. Modern personal protective equipment and updated safety standards help crews safely operate and maintain this critical infrastructure.
These heavy-duty rotors are the heart of hydroelectric generators, spinning to convert the energy of Shasta Reservoir water into clean, renewable electricity.
