It is easy to be astonished when you find immigration severe opposition in countries that actually need much immigration, Spain for instance. It has a fertility rate of 1.1. Of all the countries in the world, Spain needs serious immigration, legal immigration of course.

The fertility rate of a civilisation needs to be around 2.1 for it not to shrink and to continue with a stable economic footprint. If it falls below 2.1, then younger generations will have to work more just to support the older generations. This means, as a civilisation, you start diminishing, and either everything will cost you more as a society, or you divorce your values and leave the old simply die quicker, an ultra right wing shaman would say.

Higher fertility rates are also very handy in conflicts. Lower fertility rates makes most armed conflicts a suicidal choice. So, if you have a low fertility rate, then you should fix this quickly, or you will turn into a social responsibility black hole whose security is more at risk and costs more.

The solution to a lower fertility rate is either to raise it to reach the optimal 2.1 level or above if you want to grow, but this takes ages. Or to simply use immigration, the most effective and immediate way to stay afloat, and survive.

I am not going to list the endless benefits of having a community comprised of multi-ethnic-culture groups. This needs another post. Multi-ethnicity and culture is a societal super power rich in the tools of mass construction. It is the fabric of leading societies.

So, regardless of the optics of today’s events, I find that anti immigration movement in countries with such low fertility rates to be out of context, because they are the ones who need immigration the most.

Of course there are many xenophobes everywhere. But using them, motivating them, and organising them, this orchestration, can be a self destructive crime. It is not in the national interest of these societies. It is an effective recipe to collapse.
