My heart breaks when I think about the future of the economy and society. Efficiency has historically always been nearly entirely good.

AI efficiency is fundamentally different. It doesn't just push people to different parts of the economy - it removes the need for the cognitive layer humans have been migrating up into for 250 years, and there's no obvious higher layer left to migrate into.

75% of knowledge workers being replaced doesn't mean we all just have the same life working at McDonalds. It just means that more of our general population is pushed to lower paying, lower personally-rewarding labor... if that.

It will look like slow disappearance - declining birth rates, isolation, reduced family formation, deaths of despair, people who never form, never marry, never feel needed.

That... is not a good thing.

The future is materially bright - and culturally and socially darker than possible to imagine.
