This is a must read.
A study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that simply following evidence-based guidelines reduced Vitamin D testing by 25.3% and saved nearly $112,000 (!!!)
Vitamin D is one of the most "abused" test-and-treat practices in medicine.
Low vitamin D levels are linked to a large number of diseases, but supplementing vitamin D rarely fix them. In fact, all the studies on vitamin D has been mostly neutral and largely negative.
Correlation ≠ causation. Low Vitamin D is often a marker of poor health, not the driver of diseases.
High Vitamin D levels often reflect a healthy lifestyle (outdoor activity, better diet, fitness). The benefit comes from the lifestyle, not just the vitamin level.
When in large high quality trials (like VITAL or D2d) researchers gave vitamin D supplements to general populations, it failed to prevent cancer, heart disease, or diabetes.
Sickness causes low Vitamin D, not the other way around. This thelogic of reverse causality.
Vitamin D as a disease marker is like the Fire-Fighter logic. Firefighters are always found at the site of fires, but they don't cause them. Similarly, low Vitamin D is often a responder to bodily stress. Pumping up the levels artificially is like sending more firefighters. It doesn't necessarily mean they will put out the fire.
"Vitamin D is associated with disease" is a story about risk markers. "Supplements prevent disease" is a claim that science mostly doesn't support. This is why fixing the number on the lab report (especially a low vitamin D) with a pill doesn't always translate to fixing the patient's health.
Supplement Vitamin D only in these situations (as per guidelines). For the rest, stop wasting people's money on testing and vitamin D supplementation.
[1] Children and adolescents (1–18 years) to prevent nutritional rickets and potentially reduce respiratory infections.
[2] For adults with high-risk prediabetes, the guidelines suggest empiric Vitamin D supplementation. Studies (like the D2d trial analyses) suggest this may help reduce the progression from prediabetes to Type 2 diabetes.
[3] In pregnant women, to lower the risk of pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure risk), intrauterine mortality (death of fetus in uterus), and preterm birth.
[4] Only in older adults (75+ years) - to potentially lower mortality risk.
That fatigue you feel. That hair loss you developed. That skin colour change you see. That poor sleep you experienced. That muscle pain you have and that non-specific joint discomfort you feel every week - guess what? Those are not because of a low vitamin D. Some actually develop these symptoms AFTER testing for vitamin D and finding it to be low.
Stop listening to useless influencers, science illiterate nutritionists and dietitians and overconfident gym bros on social media.

Are You Taking Your Vitamin D the Right Way?
▶️Vitamin D is fat-soluble, which means it is best absorbed with food that contains some fat (like milk, eggs, nuts, or avocado).
▶️Taking it on an empty stomach can cut absorption by up to 50%, reducing its effectiveness for bone, muscle, and immune health.
Useful Tip
✅Take your Vitamin D supplement after your heaviest meal of the day, not on an empty stomach.
Small change. Big impact on your health.

Hello, Vidit. I am not a fan of chess, but you are an important person for our country and I did not mean to offend your family. I am sure they are good people. I was stating plain facts from a professional standpoint and I do not mince my words. You may call that ego or whatever, to console yourself, no problem.
Your statement on Doctors Day claiming an Ayurveda practitioner, Homeopath, Cosmetologist and a Physiotherapist were doctors is wrong and I stand by my words. Doctors' Day in India marks both the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India's most revered physicians and a key figure in shaping the healthcare system.
Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Cosmetology or Physiotherapy are not realistic clinical medicine or and their practitioners are not clinical physicians. Physiotherapy is a legit branch of healthcare (adjunct to clinical medicine), but the rest are just plain sham - especially Homeopathy, which is also known as N*zi Medicine because H*tler tried to integrate it with conventional medicine at the time.
You got all worked up and started personally attacking me because you were ignorant of this fact. I do not need to keep an ego towards a chess GM or his family. You don't make me insecure and your family is of no concern to me from a professional standpoint.
But what you claim them to be - has major public health consequence, because someone of your stature, being ignorant about science and health affects public perception of realistic healthcare and pseudoscientific practices.
Your statements normalize pseudoscience and primitive therapies as healthcare practices when they are not. They are alternative medicine. And alternative medicine is medicine that is not proven to work. Just like there is no alternative chemistry, alternative physics or alternative mathematics, alternative medicine is also not medicine. And its practitioners are not doctors.
I am a certified internist with a doctorate in hepatology and liver transplant medicine with 260 peer reviewed scientific publications, 4400 citations and h-index of 30 (just for your information). You don't know me and how useful I am to my patients and their families. I suggest you do a bit of homework before throwing such childish tantrums.
I am staying in my lane and always have. Calling out medical misinformation is what I do apart from being a full-time doctor. I suggest you stay in your lane and discuss more on chess. Sorry for the checkmate. And for a change, talk about chess and try being useful. All the best for your future matches.
This UPSC-prep cult needs to be dismantled & destroyed. Complete sociopaths with zero idea of how india runs outside of their 24*7 rote study room end up governing the public.
Continuous glucose monitors are helpful for specific situations in diabetes, but in healthy people they can promote food anxiety and so must not be used as some influencers promote excitedly.
Dear friends, some good news. I will be an invited main stage speaker at the QED: Question, Explore, Discover, the fascinating and influential annual skeptics conference held in Manchester, England this year.
QED is widely recognized as the largest skepticism and pop-science conference in the UK.
QED hasn’t had an India-based speaker in its 14-year run. I am happy to be the first!
You can see list of prior speakers here: https://t.co/v7SpfTEtTq
Thank you to the organizers and especially Michael Marshall (@MrMMarsh) for the kind invitation and this wonderful opportunity 🙏

Strength training is important and a must for every one
➡️Many people feel that walking alone is sufficient and there is no need to do any other form of exercise.
➡️Those who are overweight express surprise that they are unable to lose weight and diabetics are shocked to see high blood sugars despite them walking for one hour every day.
➡️Agree that walking is an excellent form of exercise, and it can be done by almost everyone, but it is not sufficient in isolation.
✅Strength training is important. It is not a question of which of the two is better- walking or strength training. The fact is-a combination of both is better than either of them alone.
➡️Strength training (ST) is not meant only for adults or male gender.
➡️Strength training should become a part of fitness plan for children from 7 years of age.
➡️Women should also do strength training. They should not fear that ST could make them muscular, which could adversely affect their appearance. There are several health-related benefits of ST among women too.
➡️Older adults should also engage in regular ST. This is because sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) and dynapenia (loss of muscle strength) are common in older age. ST can help in preserving muscle mass and strength.
its amazing how chatgpt knows everything about subjects I know nothing about, but is wrong like 40% of the time about things im an expert on. not going to think about this any further
