After you buy your first straight razor I actually recommend that you don't shave your face with it first. Practice on a different body part like the inside of your arm. This area lets you to hold the razor properly and see what you're doing without having to look at the mirror.

If you're flying and you want to take your straight razor with you, then I recommend putting it in a leather toiletry bag and stick the toiletry bag in checked luggage.

If you're straight razor isn't shaving as well as it used to, then there are two things you can try doing. You can try to strop it using some strop paste and see if it starts shaving better or you can hone it/pay someone else to hone it.

I compare the performance of a Harry's Razor to the Gillette Fusion 5 razor. I got more shaves out of the Harry's razor than the Fusion5 razor, but the precision trimmer on the Harry's razor rusted pretty early on rendering it useless. #shaving

Typically you use a shave brush to lather both shaving soap and shaving cream. Shaving soap is similar in feel to a bar of soap and usually you put it in a shaving mug or bowl. Shaving cream has more moisture in it than shaving soap and is easier to lather.

Using a hot towel or taking a hot shower before you shave will help soften your beard before you shave. Definitely something I don’t do often enough!
