My Jewish friend meets a Ukrainian acquaintance in tears. She talks about Russian missiles hitting Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa. And then asks, bewildered: ‘Why us?! We’ve never done anything bad to anyone!’

My Jewish friend doesn’t challenge the statement.
She comforts her instead.

But she quietly reserves the right to think about Ukrainian history in a bit more "complex" way:

- as someone raised on stories of Ukrainian pogromists from the Khmelnytsky era, Koliivshchyna, and from the Petliura years

- as someone in whose family some stories about Ukrainian auxiliary policemen and banderowcy were more terrifying than the stories about the Germans

Those in the West who ‘discovered’ Ukraine in 2022 discovered it as a victim and a heroine — but not as a perpetrator.
And yet it was many things.
It still is many things — even to its own children, especially the 'mighty' one.
