St. Mary’s-Colgan adds another championship trophy to one of the greatest dynasties in Kansas high school baseball history.
The Panthers captured the 2026 KSHSAA 2-1A state baseball championship Friday at Tointon Family Stadium with a 7-3 victory over TMP-Marian, giving legendary head coach Mike Watt his 19th state title as a head coach. Even more remarkable, every one of those championships has come since winning his first state crown in 1993.
Colgan once again showed why the Panthers remain one of the premier small school programs in Kansas, rallying late with a four-run seventh inning to pull away from the Monarchs.
Brady Crossland delivered one of the biggest performances of the day, driving in three runs while also starting on the mound. Brock Radell and Crossland helped spark a key third inning that gave Colgan its first lead of the game before Brady Badart shut the door in relief with three scoreless innings. Badart also added two stolen bases as the Panthers pressured TMP throughout the afternoon.
TMP-Marian battled throughout and tied the game in the fourth inning behind Grant Nehls, but Colgan responded in championship fashion late.
The title capped a massive day for the CNC League and Southeast Kansas baseball and softball. Earlier Friday, Girard captured the 3A state baseball championship, while Colgan softball won the 2-1A softball state title under first-year head coach Cassie Rhuems.
Another reminder that the CNC continues to make a strong case as the top small school baseball and softball league in Kansas.

Vanderbilt before Tim Beck… and Vanderbilt after Tim Beck.
The transformation is undeniable.
2023 (Before Beck)
• 2–10 overall | 0–8 SEC
• Lost games by wide margins
• Struggled to score and finish drives
• No bowl, no momentum, little offensive identity
2024 (Year 1 under Tim Beck)
• 7–6 overall | Bowl win
• Wins over Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky
• Offense showed structure, balance, confidence
• Competitive every week instead of overmatched
2025 (Year 2 leap)
• 10–2 regular season | Top-15 ranking
• High-scoring offense (45+ multiple times)
• Beat LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, Auburn
• SEC contender, not just surviving
• Headed to the ReliaQuest Bowl vs Iowa (12/31)
Beck brought Heisman finalist Diego Pavia with him after rebuilding New Mexico State University w/ Jerry Kill (Cheney native), and the results followed immediately.
Kansas roots run deep
• Ness City, Kansas native
• Former head coach at Pittsburg State University
• Tre Richardson (Highland Park), playmaker at WR/returner
• Cade McConnell (grew up in Pittsburg before moving to OK) — OL; Beck coached his father Aaron, an All-American at Pitt State
• Jerry Kill (Cheney, KS) on staff, longtime head coach at multiple programs
📍 Here’s where Tim Beck has been
Dodge City CC - player for two years out of HS
Pittsburg State - player, assistant, coordinator, head coach that won national title (2011) - spent 1985 to 2019 in Pittsburg
TCU - offensive analyst
New Mexico State - OC/QB (program turnaround)
Vanderbilt University — Offensive Coordinator (2024–present)
Kansas connections. Elite play-calling. Proven rebuilds.
Tim Beck is one of the best offensive coordinators in college football and Vanderbilt is living proof.
