Ice over broken glass

Under the gloss
The rust

And the hunger,
Lies the truth

Lobbyists will say

Someone hung on the cross
As propitiation for us
Salt of the earth
Is more than a metaphor
Taken too far

“The barns are full of grain”
We swear to God, and cry in pain
Yet as fools, the kitchen is bare
With only hunger waiting there

Rivers that once carried fish
Now all that flows is blood
Thieves with a poisoned cup
Pose as saviours to free us from the flood

We called for change
And they changed a song
They planted strange grievances
One for every tongue

We never knew or saw us different
Now we can’t forget
How the songs became ethnic anthems
And we sang along

But who wears those chains
If not ourselves?
With permanent amnesia
We're locked in our shells
