ESCALATION: 🇨🇦Canada has hit back at President Trump with dollar-for-dollar tariffs on U.S. goods.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will double tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50%.

Furniture, clothing, smartphones, gaming consoles and other electronics will also face 50% duties.

The measures cover around $20 BILLION in annual U.S. imports and take effect Sept. 8.

Canada also unveiled C$7.5 BILLION in support for businesses hurt by the trade war.

President Trump just scored a major Supreme Court victory on mail-in voting ahead of the midterms.

In a 6-3 decision, the justices are allowing the administration to move forward, at least for now, with key parts of Trump’s March executive order after they were blocked by a lower court.

The order calls for the federal government to create lists of voters eligible to receive federal ballots and requires states to provide information allowing the Postal Service to verify their eligibility.

The United States is preparing a sweeping new round of economic sanctions against Iran as the Trump administration intensifies pressure on Tehran, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent calls the effort an “economic D-Day.”

Japan is trying to balance growth and security spending against an already enormous debt burden. A record budget can support investment, but without stronger revenue or spending discipline, the financing costs become the bigger long-term problem.

🇯🇵 Japan is getting ready for its biggest budget ever.

Government ministries are expected to ask for more than ¥130 trillion ($818 billion) for 2027, beating the previous record of ¥122 trillion.

Japan wants to spend more on growing industries and national security, and unlike before, ministries can now ask for more money without the usual limit.

But Japan expects around ¥83 trillion in tax revenue this year, so much of the gap will likely mean more borrowing.

And Japan already has the biggest government debt among major developed countries.

So Japan wants to spend more to grow, but figuring out how to pay for all of it is the hard part.
