Who says changing the world needs big resources?
A Class 9 student from Lucknow just proved it can start with fabric scraps.
Aaliya Fatima Rizavi turned discarded textile waste into colourful puppets that teach children about sustainability, blending environmental action with Lucknow’s rich puppetry tradition.
Her project, “The Puppet Teaches the Planet,” beat 2,300+ entries from 100 countries to win National Geographic’s international Slingshot Challenge.
What started with waste pieces from tailor shops is now taking her to Washington, D.C., where she’ll be honoured alongside young innovators from across the world. She also received a $1,000 incentive award for her idea.
From scraps to global recognition, this is what happens when creativity meets purpose.
