I’m struggling to understand how teaching post 16 qualifications in a school is worth more than teaching the exact same qualifications and more in a college when we are all public sector.
We need to put respect for ALL teachers at the heart of the education and skills system.
@AoC_info@AoCDavidH We know you tried hard on this one & thought that the principle of fair treatment for FE teachers had been fought and won last year but what next David - this is so unfair, unexpected, unexplainable, unjustified & unnecessarily impactful on FECs as we return to the public sector

Well said @LordBlunkett Tight timescales don’t bode well given the hundreds of thousands of young people who will be affected if this isn’t done well. I’m really hoping that the Civil Servants will listen and hear the experts and professionals 🙏

I am so very sorry that I underestimated the powerful, unelected and non-parliamentary forces which continue to be ranged against choice for post-16 young people across the country.
I am sad, not because I appear to have lost, but because of the tens of thousands of young people affected. Those who have campaigned so vigorously will not be the losers. It is the young people, whose options and choices will no longer exist. Perhaps, just perhaps, the limited review will save some options from September 2025. However, if the internal review itself is conducted by those who have already made their minds up, the outcome will be a foregone conclusion.
After meeting female finance leaders of Canada, the USA, Indonesia, and the IMF - I say this to women and girls everywhere:
Let this picture show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, hopes or dreams for the future.
Good decision 👍🏻 IMO to pause defunding quals that have worked for students and employers for many years. A swift review. I hope the time will be well spent listening to expert leaders, teachers, students and employers. This decision affects people’s lives, let’s get it right.😁
🚨 NEW: I've just announced a pause and review of the defunding of BTECs
By doing so, we will:
✅ Support BTEC students
✅ Commit to roll out T-Levels
✅ Conclude the review by the end of the year
We were thrilled to welcome the newly appointed Secretary of State for Education, @bphillipsonMP, for her first visit to a further education college after being appointed to her new role following the change of government earlier this month.

There’s much more we need to do to break down the barriers to opportunity, but after 14 long years we’re getting on with the job.
Actions, not just words.
Thanks so much, as ever, @LouHaigh for your support for @sheffcol. Great to see you and loving the hair 🔥. A real pleasure to talk education, skills and all things FE with @bphillipsonMP today and that our students got to show off their skills 🤓 ☺️
A massive well done to our bakery students who swept the floor at the @abst_ Awards.
Our talented students won a total of 15 medals (4 gold, 7 silver, 4 bronze!) for their products, which ranged from breads to fancy pastries 🥖🍰
Huge congratulations to all involved!
