NEWS: UK-first trial of low carbon, 3D-printed substation foundations.
We’re working with Hyperion Robotics and the University of Sheffield on a UK-first trial of 3D-printed technology for low-carbon substation foundations.
This innovation project aims to manufacture, install, and test 3D-printed concrete foundations that could significantly reduce waste, carbon emissions, and costs for consumers. If rolled out across National Grid substations this work could save up to 705 tons of concrete and 323 tons of CO2 over the next decade, equating to £1.7 million in consumer savings.

Congratulations to our colleagues across the Faculty and @TheAMRC on this significant achievement. We're proud of our track record in fundamental research, translating this at scale for industry and how our research-led teaching is developing the next generation of engineers.
We’re delighted to announce that we are leading the UK in engineering research income and investment - we’ve attracted the highest level of funding two years in a row, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency! 🥳

Thank you to @Abtisam_Mohamed for taking the time to join our researchers in Parliament this week. We look forward to welcoming you to our @EpitaxyFacility to find out more about our work and how this national facility plays a central role in enabling UK University research through the provision of high-quality Semiconductor Epitaxy for custom designed structures and devices.
In Sheffield, we are lucky to have pioneering businesses like AEGIQ and the @sheffielduni Centre for Nanoscience and Technology working together on developing semiconductors.
I was pleased to join them in Parliament to hear how this important industrial field has developed and grown and how it provides significant highly skilled jobs.
I look forward to visiting them again in Sheffield to support them to develop their worker further

Congratulations to Computer Science Alumna Qamar for winning this award! Qamar’s time at Sheffield shaped her resilience, collaborative skills, and drive to turn challenges into opportunities for the greater good. Now she's transforming lives by creating groundbreaking devices like the coronary artery disease monitor, early stroke detection device, and portable fever and post-surgical wound monitoring devices, with many more to come!
🚀Exciting News! @sheffielduni spinout company, BOW, has secured a massive £4 million investment from @NorthGritstone to unleash the power of #robotics 🤖
BOW will bridge the gap between different robotic systems, allowing developers to focus on creativity instead of technical hurdles.
This investment will fuel BOW's growth and help developers realise the full potential of this exciting technology, all here in #Sheffield!

Really fascinating to hear the story behind Opteran, a spinout from our School of Computer Science, and how it developed from 10 years of fundamental research looking at the question of how brains work.
Opteran, a University of Sheffield spinout, is exploring new ways of solving robot autonomy.
@OpteranTech, which was founded by @DrJimminy, Dr Alex Cope and @DavidRajan, uses 'natural intelligence' to enable machines to see, sense, navigate and make decisions.
