Nigerian Expat Doctor Recounts Experience Of R*cism In The UK

For many African healthcare professionals across the Diaspora, this is a weaponized accusation.

Dr. Paul Awah, a radiographer within the UK’s NHS, is speaking out about a reality that many Africans living abroad face daily: the exhaustion of having to prove their competence in a system that inherently views them as intruders. From patients feigning inability to understand his clear English to the blatant refusal of care based solely on skin color, the professional environment has become increasingly hostile.

Africa's best and brightest are forced to work "extra hard" just to be recognized as professionals and as humans.

At a time when popular revolutions to seize political sovereignty and economic freedom are incubating across the continent, Africans living under such circumstances abroad will soon have to answer the very important question: Is the search for opportunity worth the constant, systematic assault on your dignity?

In line with the directive of Mr. Governor @jidesanwoolu to rid the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of all forms of infractions, environmental pollution, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, and market displays on highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways, enforcement operations uncovered a disturbing act of vandalism beneath the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija.

Investigations revealed that suspected hoodlums had deliberately vandalised critical structural components of the bridge by removing iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other supporting materials essential to the integrity of the infrastructure. This criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure.

Following this discovery, a joint midnight enforcement operation involving officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force was conducted at the location. The operation led to the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums, who will be prosecuted in accordance with the extant laws of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting public infrastructure and will continue to take decisive action against individuals or groups engaged in acts of vandalism, environmental infractions, and other criminal activities that threaten the safety and wellbeing of residents.
