I finished this book in one day because it was so good. It masterfully explains how Ghazali blends different types of knowledge – empirical, logical, and mystical – into a coherent whole. Outstanding scholarship. A must-read! I will definitely integrate this into my courses.

You can try to attack this idea all you want, but in truth, we all are doing it ourselves all the time. Even when we claim that we are taking our moral belief system from some objective source, it is our subjective interpretation and conviction that is taking the decision.

There is an extreme idea of morality conveyed in the lyrics of the song "the child of devil" (opening song from Attack on Titan). It says, "Rightness is to believe strongly in yourself". This implies that an individual is the ultimate decider in defining what is right and wrong.

In the story of Attack on Titan, for example, it was Eren, the protagonist, who single-handedly decided what the fate of humanity was going to be because he passed his judgement over others believing that what he thinks right IS the ultimate truth.
